SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio –- Notre Dame College celebrated Homecoming weekend with a dramatic 22-17 victory over No. 9 Army, in which the winning try came with no time remaining. The game was played after NDC's Homecoming football game, on Saturday afternoon.
Notre Dame, who entered the game ranked 14th in D1A Rugby, welcomed West Point with open arms. With many NDC alumni in the military, this was a perfect fit.
"[Army's head coach] Matt Sherman is a great coach and a class act," said Notre Dame College head coach
Jason Fox. "He agreed to move the kickoff back to 4 p.m. to accommodate Homecoming, and they were great opponents."
Fadzai Mushonga opened-up the scoring and put NDC ahead, 5-0. Army soon equaled the score at five.
Andrew Guerra pushed one over and
Patrick O'Shea converted the kick to make it 12-5 at the half.
In a very dramatic second half, Army led 17-12 with time winding down. Prop
Sam Klimkowski's try with five minutes to go tied the game. Then, with no time left, lock
Calum Haddock powered over to win, 22-17. It was a special day for Haddock because it was his birthday and his parents and sister had traveled all the way from Scotland to see him play. They were able see the game live and were able to see him be the hero.
Kwame Sylvester II and
Fadzai Mushonga had big games at wing and fullback. Mushonga was also notable because
Jeff Mutuku was slated to start, but picked up an injury in warmups. Mushonga was thrust into the fullback role, working nicely with Sylvester for the opening try, and both played superbly all day.
Penn State is now 1st in the Rugby East with a 3-0 record. Kutztown, who was idle this week, is second at 2-0, while Notre Dame leapfrogs St. Bonaventure thanks to the win. Army sits at 0-2. Penn State and Kutztown face off next week. That is likely to be the conference decider.
Notre Dame will battle Kutztown University, on October 19. The games are scheduled to begin at 1 and 3 p.m.
