Notre Dame battles Frostburg State for second in North

This week: Notre Dame College travels to Frostburg State University on Saturday, October 26, for a 1 p.m. contest.

Records: Notre Dame is riding a four-game winning streak to bring its record up to 6-3-4 (5-2-3 MEC). Frostburg State is on a shorter streak, winning its last two games to improve to 6-7-1 (6-5-0 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels is in his 17th season as the head coach for the Falcons. During his time at NDC, Shiels has gone 169-104-24 with a 74-12-11 MEC record. Brian Parker is in his 18th season at the helm of the Frostburg State program. He holds a record of 222-105-39 (6-5 MEC).

Rankings: Neither of the teams received votes in the preseason United State Soccer Coaches Poll released October 22.

Series History: Notre Dame is 0-1 against Frostburg State after a 2-0 loss to the Bobcats earlier this season.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has been on a scoring frenzy of late, finding the back of the net eight times in the last four games. During the Falcons' four-game win streak, NDC has scored multiple goals in a game three times. Overall this season, Notre Dame is 5-0 when scoring more than one goal. NDC has not suffered a loss this season when scoring, with a 1-0-1 record when tallying one goal. The Falcons have only lost one game in October, the teams last loss coming on October 3. Since that first game in the 10th month, NDC is 4-0-1. Earning points in each of their last five games, the Falcons now sit in second place in the North Division with 18 points. Frostburg State tied Notre Dame's total with a win yesterday, October 23, against West Liberty. The winner of this weekend's game will be in sole possession of the number two spot.

Noting the Bobcats: Frostburg State has had a strong showing in its first year at the NCAA Division II level, and first season in the MEC. With a 6-5 record in the conference, and currently sitting tied for second in the MEC North, the Bobcats are out-performing expectations. FSU was picked to finish fourth in the North with just 29 points while NDC, Fairmont State and West Liberty were picked first, second and third, respectively, with 45 points or more in the voting. Frostburg State has the fourth-best scoring differential in the MEC, with a 0.60 per-game margin in its favor. This, despite the fact that the Bobcats are fourth-worst in opponent scoring average. FSU allowed 1.40 points per game, but score 2.00 points on average to make up for it. Comparatively, NDC is third best in defense with 0.75 goals allowed per game, but are sixth in scoring average (1.17).
