INDIANAPOLIS – The Notre Dame College bowling teams descended on Indianapolis for the Western Shootout on October 19 and 20, notching two more top-ten finishes.
The Notre Dame men averaged 203 for 30 individual games on Saturday, qualifying fifth out of 31 teams. Junior
Dean Vargo led the charge with a 220 average, finishing 12th among 311 men competing in the event. Vargo, who struck out in the tenth frame of both Baker 300 games the team bowled in Wisconsin two weeks earlier, opened the tournament with eight consecutive strikes on his way to a 263 first game score.
Sophomore
Cameron Gonce was 19th in the Men's Division with a 217 average. Junior
Daniel Marriott averaged 214 and rolled the Falcon men's high game of 267, also in the first game. Sophomore
Anthony Doran averaged 203 for the event.
Led by Marriott's and Vargo's big games, the NDC men stormed out of the gate with a 1201 team game to start the tournament, striking on 13 of their first 15 deliveries. Freshman Conner Novak (234), Gonce (223) and Doran (214) also contributed to the effort.
After Sunday's 15 Baker games (in which each of five team members rolls two frames of a single game score), the Falcons finished in seventh place. The Men's Division was won by Calumet College of St. Joseph.
The women's team, who won two of their first three tournaments of the season, averaged 197 for 15 Baker games on Sunday, tossing seven consecutive strikes, three times. When all the dust had settled, the NDC women found themselves eighth among the 24 teams, just 40 pins out of sixth place. The Women's Division was won by Indiana Institute of Technology.
Senior
Alisha Noon was 20th among 185 competitors, averaging 182 for six games on Saturday. Senior
Alexandria Dick opened the fifth game with seven consecutive strikes on her way to a 268 score, the highest game of the weekend in the Women's Division.
The event was conducted on two challenging oil patterns (43 feet of high volume on Saturday, and 37 feet on Sunday) constructed specifically for the Shootout.
After a two-week break to mend their wings, the Falcons will return to action at the Raider Classic in the Dayton area on November 9 and 10.
