Women's rugby opens NIRA play against a tough Quinnipiac team

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – On September 21, a young but tenacious Notre Dame College women's rugby team took on the experienced Bobcats of Quinnipiac University on Founders Field, in Pittsburgh.

A mishandled opening kickoff and a missed scoring opportunity two minutes later, turned out to be the theme of the day for the Falcons. The loss certainly felt preventable, as they made many mistakes, however, Quinnipiac was the better team on the day. Notre Dame fell by a score of 74-20.

"I know it's discouraging for the players," said head coach Luke Markovich. "They have so much heart and passion, but little mistakes, against experienced opposition, will almost always result in points. It's a tough lesson to learn, but we will be better for it. Our message and outlook are clear."

Saher Hamdan recorded two tries for NDC and Michelle Majewski finished off one try. Alyssa Riedel had one conversion and one penalty.

"While the score line doesn't show it, we controlled the ball well, when in possession," Markovich mentioned. "There were many chances to put points on the board, and that is something that will sit with the team."

Notre Dame will look to turn things around after playing three tough opponents so far this season. The Falcons came up short against Davenport in the season opener and against Army, last weekend.

The Falcons continue NIRA play as they take on Harvard University, at home, on October 12. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
