Women's bowling wins again; men qualify for round of eight

DAYTON, Ohio – The Notre Dame College bowling juggernaut rolled on at the Orange and Black Classic in the Dayton area on October 12 and 13, as the women's team won their second tournament of the young season.

Seeded fifth after the qualifying rounds at Poelking Lanes South in Centerville, the NDC women averaged 199 while going 9-3-1 (tying a game at 234) to win three best-of-five matches in the finals. After defeating fourth seed Lindsey Wilson College (3-1), they toppled top seed Lourdes University (3.5-1.5) and second seed, and host school, University of Pikeville (3-1).

Senior Alexandria Dick rolled five consecutive strikes in each of the first two matches, and junior Meghan Ritzinger struck seven times in eight attempts (leaving a pocket 10-pin on her other effort) in the championship bout.

During the preliminary rounds, senior Alisha Noon averaged 184 to finish 14th among the 211 women competing in the low-scoring event in which the field averaged only 153 on the challenging 43-foot oil pattern. The Falcons' highest individual game on Saturday was junior Haley Groat's 232.

Notre Dame's women's team also reached the championship round in the JV Division, qualifying third and beating Concordia University (3-1) and second seed Wright State University (3-2) before falling to top seed University of Pikeville (2-3) in a tightly contested match.

Senior Angela Gale was named to the Women's JV All-Tournament Team after finishing fifth among JV bowlers and 44th overall with 839 pins for five games. Gale rolled solid strikes in the tenth frame to win the deciding game by 3 pins against both Concordia and Wright State.

Both Falcon squads won their respective divisions in the Racers Classic in Lima on September 21 and 22.

In the men's division, contested at Beaver-Vu Bowl in Beavercreek, the Falcons averaged 209 to claim the top seed in the 33-team field before falling in the round of eight to Lourdes University (2-3). Lincoln Memorial University won the men's division bracket.

During Sunday's opening round of Baker games (in which five teammates each roll two frames of a single game score), the Falcons, who had tossed two perfect 300 games in the Midwest Collegiate Championships on October 6, flirted with perfection again. In their final qualifying game, the Falcons rolled nine strikes before leaving a stubborn 7-pin in the tenth frame and finishing with 279.

Sophomore Cameron Gonce (whose 237 average was second overall) and sophomore Anthony Doran (224 average) both made the All-Tournament Team.

The Falcons also made the round of eight in the men's JV division, qualifying third before falling to eventual champions University of Pikeville (2-3).  Freshman Christopher Moore averaged 212 and was named to the Men's JV All-Tournament Team.

The Falcons will head to Indianapolis on October 19 and 20 to compete in the Western Shootout.
