This week: Notre Dame College travels to Ashland tonight, September 5, to play its final non-conference game of the year at 7 p.m. Then the Falcons will visit West Liberty and Fairmont State to begin Mountain East Conference action. NDC will play at WLU on Sunday, September 9, at 1 p.m. before heading to FSU on Wednesday, September 12, for a 7 p.m. game.
Records: The Falcons are 0-2, 0-0 MEC after falling to Edinboro and Gannon in their opening week. Ashland is 1-0-1, with a tie at Lewis and a win against Tiffin last week. West Liberty is 0-2-1, 0-0 MEC, losing both of its road games and tying its home game this season. Fairmont State is 1-1 this season in non-conference play and will face Urbana before hosting NDC.
Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels is in his 14th season as the head coach for the Falcons. During his time at NDC, Shiels has gone 154-97-18 with a 62-9-7 MEC record. Danny Krispinsky is in his sixth season at Ashland and holds a 59-25-10 record. The founding coach of West Liberty's soccer program, Barry Christmas has been with the team since 2011. In his seventh season this year, he has a 27-63-18, 22-38-16 MEC record. Brandon Heembrock is in his second season at the helm of the Fairmont State program. He is currently 5-8-6, 3-7-6 MEC.
Rankings: None of the teams received votes in the September 4 United State Soccer Coaches Poll.
Series History: NDC is 0-1-1 against Ashland after a tie in 2012 and a loss last season. The Falcons have never lost against West Liberty or Fairmont State as they hold an 8-0-3 record against the Hilltoppers and are 5-0-1 against Fairmont State.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame suffered two losses in their season openers last week, starting its season off with a losing record for the first time in its NCAA Division II history. With their third non-conference game of the season tonight, the Falcons will look to rebound before heading into MEC play. NDC has won the Mountain East three times and finished second in the two seasons the team hasn't won so no matter the outcome on Wednesday evening, the Falcons should be ready to go when the team arrives in West Liberty.
Noting the Eagles: Still very early in the season, Ashland has not established a singular offensive threat yet. On their three goals, three different Eagles have scored with two others on the assists. Two forwards have scored two of their goals while defenders have accounted for the other goal and both assists. Ashland has only allowed five shots on goal this season, but two of the five have gotten past their goalkeeper.
Noting the Hilltoppers: Sophomore Makayla Gammon is responsible for West Liberty's lone goal this season. Gammon has played just 28 minutes this season and taken just one shot, but it was enough to put a point on the board. Despite only scoring one goal, the Hilltoppers do lead the MEC in shots taken. WLU leads the conference with 54 shots taken, 14 more than the next highest team. Their offensive pressure has resulted in a conference-high 16 corner kicks as well.
Noting the Fighting Falcons: In two games, Fairmont State has tallied five goals; not as many as Concord's nine goals in two games, but enough for the Fighting Falcons to currently rank second in the conference with 2.50 goals per game. Like Ashland, Fairmont State's scoring has been spread out so far this season with their five goals being scored by four different players.
