SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After a loss to top-4 ranked Penn State University last week, No. 11 Notre Dame College took on Wheeling Jesuit University on Mueller Field and walked away with a 48-5 victory, on Saturday.
The game started with a mistake by NDC during the kick-off and WJU scored in the corner to take a 5-0 lead.
Ryan Cahill would open the Notre Dame scoring with great systematic play offensively.
Harry Bowditch found a seam and gave it to
Calum Haddock who had a nice offload to Cahill.
Patrick O'Shea would convert the kick to go up 7-5.
Minutes later,
Cory Graham would find a gap for a nice run and pass to Liam Tipton- Fletcher for the score. O'Shea would convert to make the score 14-5.
After an errant pass from WJU and good defensive pressure by NDC,
Tarik James got a foot on the ball. James kicked the ball forward where it bounced in his hands and he outraced the defense for a score. The conversion was no good and the score was 19-5 at the half, in favor of the Falcons.
Tries by
Harry Bowditch (2),
Christian Olsen (2),
Corey Davis (1) and two conversions by
John Bradfield in the second half would round out the scoring, with NDC on top, 48-5.
"We really stuck to our structure on both offense and defense, and it definitely showed," head coach
Jason Fox, said. "We worked on eliminating penalties around the breakdown that hindered us last weekend. We played very good defense and took away space very well in open field, something that we did not do weekend prior also."
"Moving
Calum Haddock from lock to #8 really paid off as he was a force with ball in hand," Fox mentioned. "His attack lines were great.
Harry Bowditch did a great job controlling things at #9. However, this was a total team victory as everyone pitched in and did their job"
The Falcons remain 11th in the Week 5 Rankings, released by D1A College Rugby every Wednesday.
Notre Dame will play No. 15 Kutztown University on Mueller Field on October 6. The game will begin at 12 p.m.
