Baseball begins conference play on the road

This week: Notre Dame travels to West Virginia State and Charleston this weekend for two doubleheader matchups. The Falcons will play the Yellow Jackets on Saturday, March 17, before heading to UC on Sunday, March 18. Both days' games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Records: The Falcons started the season 2-11 in non-conference play. West Virginia State is 7-4 while Charleston is 5-8.

Coaches Corner: Len Barker is in his seventh season as the head coach at Notre Dame. Barker is 133-164-1, 79-60 MEC at the helm of the Falcons' program. Sean Loyd has been with the West Virginia State program since 1994. Loyd took over head coaching duties in 2014 and holds a record of 129-78, 94-50 MEC. Andrew Wright is in his third season with Charleston and his eighth overall as a head coach. He holds a 55-64 record with the Golden Eagles.

Rankings: None of the teams competing this weekend were ranked in the March 14 National College Baseball Writers' Association Poll.

Series History: Notre Dame is 10-14 against West Virginia State and 5-4 against Charleston in program history.

Noting the Falcons: Like most college teams, Notre Dame has a mix of returning players and newcomers highlighting the early part of the season. On the offensive end, the Falcons have three players hitting over .300; transfers Lukas Thompson (.346) and Drake May (.318) have combined for eight RBIs and eight runs while Zach Santoro (.333) starts off his second season at NDC with eight RBIs and seven runs. On the mound, senior Josh Armbruster and sophomore Tyler Gault have combined for seven starts in 13 games... The pitching duo ranked first and second on the team last season in strikeouts, and this season they each have at least 15 Ks... Armbruster threw the first complete game of the season for NDC in Florida last week, striking out nine batters in eight innings.

Noting the Golden Eagles: After starting the season 0-5, Charleston has bounced back to win five of its last eight games. All eight of those games were home games for the Golden Eagles and the beginning of a 13-game home stand that continues this weekend. Charleston's bullpen runs deeps as they have three relievers who still boast ERAs of 0.00. Jack Brunetti, Jordan Peck and Hunter Townsend have a combined nine innings pitched in seven game appearances. Townsend has one of the UC's two saves while Peck earned a win against Pitt-Johnstown.

Noting the Yellow Jackets: West Virginia State returns home from a successful trip to North Carolina where the team went 3-1. Highlighting their trip south was a two-game sweep of No. 4 Mercyhurst who was previously unbeaten. Colby Gainer (2-0) has been impressive early this season with a 1.93 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched. His strong play has been recognized as he has won back-to-back MEC Pitcher of the Week honors. On the offensive end, the Yellow Jackets have only one hitter batting over .300. Brandon Wright (.333) leads his team with 13 hits.
