Baseball heads to Indianapolis for three-game stint

This week: Notre Dame travels to Indianapolis for a three-game trip to play the University of Indianapolis twice and Quincy once. The Falcons will play at Indianapolis on Friday, February 23, at 1 p.m. and Sunday, February 25, at 12 p.m. Between the two games against the Greyhounds, NDC will play Quincy on Saturday, February 24, at 1 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are 1-3 after their opening weekend. NDC went 1-1 against Davis & Elkins and 0-2 against Tusculum. Indianapolis is 2-1 after their first series against Kentucky Wesleyan. Quincy also started their season last week and went 0-2 against Delta State.

Coaches Corner: Len Barker is in his seventh season as the head coach at Notre Dame. Barker is 132-156-1, 79-60 MEC at the helm of the Falcons' program. Gary Vaught hits the quarter-century mark this year as it is his 25th season with Indianapolis. Vaught holds a record of 777-510-2 with the Greyhounds. Josh Rabe will be in his eighth season at Quincy during the 2018 campaign. Rabe is second all-time in wins at Quincy with a 236-144 record.

Rankings: Quincy is the No. 13 team in the February 21 National College Baseball Writers' Association Poll. Neither of the other teams playing this week were ranked.

Series History: The Falcons are 2-5 against Indianapolis in a series dating back to 2013. This will be the first meeting between Quincy and Notre Dame.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame saw both end of the success spectrum from their pitchers in its first two days of competition, but the strong play was enough shine through. Starting pitcher Tyler Gault earned MEC Pitcher of the Week honors after winning against Davis & Elkins while giving up just one earned run in six innings. Gault struck out four batters during his first start. Tyler Dalzell and Todd Marshall also threw well in relief as neither gave up a run in multiple innings pitched. Marshall appeared in two games to throw 3.1 innings and allowed just one hit. On the offensive side, transfer Ryan Kosmynka led the Falcons with a .545 average in three starts to score four runs while batting in another three.

Noting the Greyhounds: All three of Indianapolis's games against Kentucky Wesleyan were close battles. UIndy came out on top in two of the three, but each game decided by two or fewer runs. The Greyhounds lost the first game after a walk-off home run and bounced back to win the next two. Indianapolis mimicked the late-game heroics that downed them in their first match up and scored two runs in the eighth and ninth innings of their second game to win 9-7 and scored a run in the ninth inning of the rubber match to win 4-3.

Noting the Hawks: Quincy is coming off a great 2017 season and will be looking to rebound after a tough 0-2 start this year. The Hawks earned a No. 9 ranking before the season started due to their appearance in the NCAA Division II National Tournament. Quincy slid to No. 13 this week, but is now ranked above No. 24 UC San Diego who beat them in their final game last year. The Hawks got off to tough starts in both of their games this year as their starting pitchers provided lackluster performances. Jeff Hightower highlighted the offensive end for the team as he reached base on 6 of his 7 plate appearances.
