Volleyball hosts MEC duo

This week: Notre Dame College volleyball will host Concord University on October 5, at 5 p.m., and the University of Virginia's College at Wise on October 6 at 1 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are currently 7-10 and hold a 1-3 Mountain East Conference record. Concord is 4-15 with a 1-3 conference record, while UVa-Wise is 4-13 (1-4 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Travis Hinkle is in his first season at Notre Dame. Kate Dillon is entering her 10th season at the helm of Concord with a record of 127-191. Kristen Salyer is in her seventh season as the head coach of Virginia-Wise and last season, the Cavaliers went 6-24 (2-14 MEC).

Rankings: None of the teams are ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 2-3 since NDC and Concord first played each other in 2013. NDC is 3-2 against UVa-Wise since 2013. Last season, Notre Dame defeated Concord, 3-1, and UVa-Wise, 3-2.

Noting the Falcons: Last week, NDC went 1-2, falling to Urbana University and Shepherd University but beating Fairmont State. After struggling in the first set against Urbana and Shepherd, the Falcons started strong, defeating Fairmont State by a score of 25-23 in the opening set. In the win against FSU, Mary Kate McHugh, who is 16th in the nation with 12.14 kills-per-set, had 13 kills while Lizzie Willis had 12 kills. This season, McHugh has 225 kills and leads everyone else by 116. Paige Staudacher added 23 assists while Katie Richardson had 16. Richardson also had four blocks and Roberta Jokubauskaite totaled three blocks. McHugh also had 24 digs in that contest, to lead the team, and Alexandra Kaeberlein totaled 20 digs. Kaeberlein is currently 10th in the nation with 6.27 digs-per-set and is tied for 7th with 395 total digs. Over the three games last week, Lizzie Willis put together a big week, stats-wise with 30 kills, eight aces, six blocks and 41.5 points. Staudacher, who is third in the conference in assists, leads the team with 557 assists and 17 aces. Alexandra Kaeberlein leads the team with 401 digs and McHugh is second with 208. Jokubauskaite leads the team with 35 blocks and 1.21 blocks-per-set. The Falcons, as a team, are 12th in NCAA Division II with 19.27 digs-per-set.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord began the season 2-15 before back-to-back wins against Bluefield State and UVa-Wise. Concord only played one game last week and it was a 3-0 sweep against the University of Virginia-Wise, representing the Mountain Lions' first conference win. Concord, who averages a hit percentage of .165, had a hit percentage of .378 against UVa-Wise. Imani Rodgers led the team with 19 kills. Erin Shannon added 12 digs while Camryn Huber totaled six blocks. This season, Concord has been swept 10 times, but three of their four wins have been sweeps. Alexi Prankus leads the team with 144 kills and also has 141 digs. Jenna Mounts has 278 assists on the season and Brooke Heck has 19 aces. Camryn Huber has given the Mountain Lions 56 blocks this campaign and Erin Shannon leads the squad at 172 digs. Huber is tied for third in the conference in blocks.

Noting the Cavaliers: UVa-Wise played two totally opposite games last week. They were swept by Concord on September 25 and then swept Bluefield State on September 27. Against Concord, Virginia-Wise hit just 10.9-percent in a 3-0 loss, and they never scored more than 18 in a set. The Cavaliers also had 22 attack errors. In their next game, Virginia-Wise did not allow Bluefield State to score more than eight points in a set as they swept the Big Blues. In the second set, BSC put just three points on the board. The Cavaliers' hit percentage of .438 was their second highest this season, only second to their first matchup of the year against Bluefield State. UVa-Wise had an eye-popping 27 aces in that game, as Briana Kerr had 10 and Morgan Milligan and Kyra Jessee each had seven. Kerr is 15th in Division II with .54 aces-per-set and Jessee is 19th at .53 aces-per-set. Kerr is also tied for 17th in NCAA-II with 32 total aces. Jessee and Kerr are one and two, respectively, in the MEC in aces. For the Cavaliers this season, Madelyn Lawrence and Brooke Abbott are tied with 128 kills. Makayla Ledford has 494 assists and 8.23 per set. Morgan Milligan has 241 digs. UVa-Wise is now 14th in the nation with 2.05 aces-per-set.
