Women's rugby battled three tough NIRA opponents over four weeks

Notre Dame College women's rugby played three games in the last four weeks and all of the contests were on the road. On September 29, the Falcons took on Quinnipiac University, then they played Harvard University on October 13 and Army on October 19.

On September 29, Notre Dame College faced off against defending NIRA champion, Quinnipiac, at Founders Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. QU showed their experience and got off to an early lead, putting the Falcons under constant pressure. The final 15-minutes of the first half were all NDC as they played a majority of the game inside QU territory, only to be held up to end the half. NDC was able to dot down two tries in the beginning of the second half but were unable to overcome the deficit with a final score of 33-10.

"We're looking forward to our next meeting," said head coach Luke Markovich, after the contest. "Credit to QU, they forced a slow start and we ended up on the back foot initially. While we showed some moments of consistency and discipline, we need to bring our entire game plan together and we failed to do so."

NDC traveled to Cambridge, Mass., on October 13, to take on No. 2 ranked Harvard. In a first ever meeting of the two sides, Harvard got out to an early lead and built it up to a 21-5 score, at halftime. NDC was able to add another in the second half but it was too late, as Harvard continued to add to their score. Harvard won, 43-12.

"While I don't believe the score line is indicative of our play, Harvard came out firing and put us on the back foot for the second week," Markovich added. "We have some work to do but the ladies recognize the areas we need to bring together. While we're unhappy with the loss, we are continuing to grow week to week and are looking to bringing everything together next match."

On October 19, the Falcons traveled to West Point, N.Y. to take on Army, the team that is currently second in NIRA. Under the lights, next to the Hudson River, the Falcons put forth their best match of the fall season to date. While the game was back and forth from the first kickoff, the Falcons dominated possession. Ultimately NDC failed to maximize on their positioning and Army finished on top with a final score of 21-14.

"I'm very proud of how the ladies stepped up this week," Markovich mentioned. "We're finally starting to show our shape and we're starting to see what we can accomplish. While we're gutted to lose such a close game, we're stronger for it, and are looking forward to a strong home stand to finish the season."

Notre Dame comes home to play American International College on October 28. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
