Volleyball jumps back into conference play with three MEC games this week

This week: Notre Dame College volleyball will play No. 20 Wheeling Jesuit University on October 16 at 6 p.m., in Murphy Gymnasium. On the road, NDC plays the University of Charleston on October 19 at 6 p.m. and on October 20, the Falcons will battle West Virginia State University at 11 a.m.

Matchup with Wheeling Jesuit: The game on October 16 was supposed to be played on September 21, but the game was postponed due to travel complications.

Records: The Falcons are currently 11-11 and hold a 4-3 Mountain East Conference record. The Cardinals are 21-3, overall, and 8-0 in the MEC. Charleston has a record of 11-13 (6-3 MEC) and West Virginia State sits at 18-9 (4-5 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Travis Hinkle is in his first season at Notre Dame. Christy Benner enters her 17th season at Wheeling Jesuit and has a record of 554-126 while her teams are 100-0 in the MEC. Jenna Theden is in her fifth season as head coach of the Golden Eagles and led the team to a 17-14 record and 13-4 MEC record, last season. In his second season, Kris Kern has a record of 32-25 (10-15 MEC) at WVSU.

Rankings: Wheeling Jesuit is ranked 20th in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons are 0-10 against Wheeling Jesuit since the series began in 2013. NDC has an 0-6 record against Charleston and a 3-2 record against West Virginia State since 2013.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame went 3-1 in the last week, including back-to-back conference wins against West Virginia Wesleyan and Glenville State. Mary Kate McHugh led the team in kills in all four of the games and posted a season-high 21 against Glenville State. She is ranked 22nd in NCAA Division II in with 4.04 kills-per-set. Alexandra Kaeberlein had 81 digs last week and now has 499 digs on the season, which ranks her eighth in the country. She is now ninth in NCAA Division II with 6.32 digs-per-set. Paige Staudacher is fourth in the MEC with 715 assists and Roberta Jokubauskaite leads the MEC with 1.36 blocks-per-set. Notre Dame is second in the conference, holding opponents to .140.

Keeping it 1000: A week after her teammate, Alexandra Kaeberlein surpassed 1500 digs, Mary Kate McHugh needs just 14 kills to reach 1000 kills for her career.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit went 3-0 last week after beating West Liberty, West Virginia State and Charleston. WJU only lost one set over that stretch, marking just the third set in conference play that the Cardinals have dropped over eight games. They are now on a 13 game winning streak. Hailey Kramer is 19th in NCAA-II with 1.25 blocks-per-set and Audrey Francis is seventh with 6.57 digs-per-set. Francis also leads the nation with 552 digs. Cassie Meyer is eight in the nation with 4.43 kills-per-set and 10th in points-per-set at 4.79. Stephanie Sylvester leads Division II with 1,084 assists. Wheeling Jesuit leads the MEC in hit percentage (.252), assists-per-set (14.40 per game), total assists (1224), kills (1272), kills-per-set (14.96), digs-per-set (20.73) and total digs (1762). They are second in block-per-game at 2.32.

Noting the Golden Eagles: Charleston began the season 3-9 following three tough tournaments. They have gone 8-4 since September 8. UC came into the past week riding a three game losing streak, but turned it around with wins against Alderson Broaddus and West Liberty. Carly Granger is currently fourth in the conference with 3.68 kills-per-set and is second with 324 total kills. Charleston is currently third in the conference with a hit percentage of .195 per game. They are third in the conference in assists-per-game with 11.92 and kills-per-game at 12.59.

Noting the Yellow Jackets: West Virginia State went 2-2 last week, defeating Berea College and Concord University during the week and then falling to Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty, on the weekend. Gabrielle Bullock is fifth in the MEC with 3.53 kills-per-set and her teammate, Tabi Pontious is second with 911 assists. Pontious is second in the MEC with 37 aces. WVSU is second in the MEC with an average hit percentage of .219. They hold teams to a .129 hit percentage and accumulate 1.85 service aces-per-set, which both lead the MEC.
