NDC volleyball will play three road games this week

This week: Notre Dame College volleyball will be traveling this week, playing three road games against Ursuline College on September 27 at 7 p.m., Wheeling Jesuit University on September 29 at 7 p.m. and West Liberty University on September 30 at 11 a.m.

Records: The Falcons are 6-8 overall and are 0-1 in the Mountain East Conference.  Ursuline has a 5-10 record and Wheeling Jesuit has a record of 11-4, 2-0 MEC. West Liberty is 9-7 in 2017 and 1-1 in the MEC.

Coaches Corner: Notre Dame volleyball head coach, Troy Haught is in his third season with a record of 26-51, 11-22 in the MEC. Last season, he coached the Falcons to a record of 16-18, 8-8 MEC. Jayme Plummer is in his third season as head coach at Ursuline and holds a record of 30-49. Last season, the Arrows went 17-15. Christy Benner is in her 15th season as the head coach for Wheeling Jesuit and has a record of 470-118 and her teams are 50-0 in the MEC. Last season the Cardinals went 41-3, 16-0 MEC, winning the MEC Tournament and the Atlantic Region Championship, eventually falling to Lewis University in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. Kayla Fetsko Mull is in her sixth season as head coach. Last season, the Hilltoppers went 23-14, 11-6 MEC and were the only conference team to win a set against Wheeling Jesuit.

Rankings: Wheeling Jesuit received 15 votes in the September 25 AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons have gone 3-5 against Ursuline since the series started in 2011, 0-8 against Wheeling Jesuit since 2013 and 5-5 against West Liberty since 2011.

Noting the Falcons: In one game last week, the Falcons lost to Urbana University, 3-0 on September 22. The Falcons kept the first two sets close, losing set one by six (25-19) and the second set by two points (25-23), before falling by 13 points (25-12) in the third set. Katlynn Dunlap led the Blue Knights in kills with 14 and Maia Dunlap led the team with 12 digs. Melissa Maczuzak led the Falcons with 15 kills and Ali Kaeberlein led the team with six digs. Maczuzak leads the team this season in kills with 204, points with 222 and attack percentage at .190. Kaeberlein leads the team in digs with 214. Maczuzak is also 13th in Division II with 204 digs and needs 49 kills to break the NDC career kills record.

Noting the Arrows: Ursuline played three games last week, losing all three and winning only one set. At home against Lake Erie College on September 19, the Arrows were swept.  Victoria Henderson had nine kills and Katelyn Selleny recorded 24 assists and 10 digs. Against Ohio Dominican University on September 22, the Arrows played well on the road but lost 3-1. Ursuline won the third set by four points (25-21) and lost the other three sets by an average of four points. Jessie Lee had 16 kills and 21 digs while Victoria Henderson had 18 kills. In their 3-0 loss to Cedarville University on September 23, Ursuline improved their hitting percentage to .144. Victoria Henderson had 11 kills and Katelyn Selleny had 28 assists and 12 digs.

Noting the Cardinals: Wheeling Jesuit did not lose a set in three matches last week, sweeping Shepherd University, Fairmont State University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The Cardinals have won eight straight games. Haley Kramer record 15 kills and Cassie Meyer had 15 digs in their 3-0 win over Shepherd on September 22. The Cardinals held a hit percentage of .181. On September 23, Wheeling Jesuit beat Fairmont State with a hit percentage of .209. Five players recorded double-digit digs. Haley Kramer had 15 kills and Cassie Meyer had 19 digs. At home against IUP on September 26, Makenna Babb added 16 digs, Haley Kramer had 15 kills and Stephanie Sylvester had 41 assists. Stephanie Sylvester is fifth in Division II with 594 assists.

Noting the Hilltoppers: In the past week West Liberty beat Salem International University 3-0, lost to Fairmont State University 3-1 and beat Shepherd University 3-1. In the win over Salem on September 19, the Hilltoppers won by an average of 9.67 points per set and had a hit percentage of .279. Olivia Baumhoer had 11 kills and Kailee Cunningham had 17 digs in the match. On September 22, West Liberty won the first set but then lost three straight sets, and the match, to Fairmont State. Mackenzie Sims had 29 digs and Raimey Benson had 17 kills. The Hilltoppers beat Shepherd in comeback fashion on September 23, losing the first set by two points and winning the final three sets by two points, each. As a team, West Liberty had 118 kills as Kailee Cunningham lead the way with 32. Mackenzie Sims and Sydney Scherer each had 16 digs. Kailee Cunningham is third in Division II with 352 digs on the season this season.
