Notre Dame volleyball set to play first conference opponent

This week: Notre Dame College will play their first conference game of the season as they take on Urbana University on September 22 at 6 p.m. in the Murphy Gymnasium.

Records: The Falcons are 6-7 on the season and 2-2 at home. The Blue Knights are 5-7 this year but hold a 2-6 record away from Urbana.

Coaches Corner: Notre Dame volleyball head coach, Troy Haught is entering his third season and has a record of 20-43, 11-21 in the MEC after two seasons. Tim Balice is in his third season as head coach and accumulated a 33-31, 17-15 MEC record in two seasons.

Rankings: Neither of the teams are ranked in the top-25 in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons have not had much success against Urbana recently, as they have gone 2-11 since 2011. Last season, they beat the Blue Knights on the road 3-2 but lost 3-1 at home.

Noting the Falcons: This will be the fifth consecutive game in the Murphy Gymnasium for Notre Dame, following their appearances on Friday and Saturday in the Notre Dame College Invitational. Last weekend, Notre Dame went 2-2, beating Salem International University 3-0 and Lock Haven University 3-2. They fell to Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Mercyhurst University. In the Falcons win over Lock Haven, Melissa Maczuzak tied her own school record with 28 kills. Maczuzak currently ranks fifth in Division II in kills with 191 and during the tournament, she had 66 kills, 34 digs and 71.5 points. Natalie Spadaro had 32 kills over the four games in the NDC Invite. Paige Staudacher had 135 assists, including 50 in the win over Lock Haven. In the two games on Saturday, Mary Kate McHugh had 36 digs and Ali Kaeberlein had 41 digs. Maczuzak leads the team with 208 points and points per set with 4.33. Kaeberlein leads the team in digs with 208 and 4.33 digs per set.

Noting the Blue Knights: After starting the season 0-4, and losing all but one set at the Ashland University Tournament, Urbana went 3-1 in four games at the Urbana Fall Invite. Last weekend, they beat Roberts Wesleyan College 3-0, California University of Pennsylvania 3-0 and Lindenwood University 3-2. Urbana is 5-1 in their last six games. Katlynn Dunlap had 61 kills, 42 kills and 65 total points. In a win over Roberts Wesleyan, Dunlap had a .423 hit percentage and .500 hit percentage in their win over Cal (Pa.). Anna Davis had 90 assists over the weekend. Katlynn Dunlap leads the team with 154.5 points and 143 kills this season. She holds the team lead by 80 kills. Katlynn's sister, Maia Dunlap leads the team with 161 digs and digs per set with 4.13.

Second Set Blues: Urbana has been outscored 280-229 in the second set of matches this season.

Get Them Late: Both Notre Dame and Urbana are outscoring or nearly outscoring their opponents in the fourth and fifth sets. NDC holds a 158-147 advantage in the fourth set and 30-22 in the fifth set. Urbana has scored 51 points in the fourth set and has allowed 51 points, but in the fifth set the Blue Knights hold a 15-9 advantage.

Attacking: Urbana has won every game when they have held opponents below a .200 attack percentage. The Falcons have won every set that they have held opponents at or below a .180 attack percentage.
