Men's rugby wins the National Championship; the women's team finishes as the National runner-up

MARIETTA, Ga. – Notre Dame College men's and women's rugby went up against the University of California Davis with a National Championship on the line, on Saturday. The men won the Division I AA National Championship, 40-20 following a very strong second half. The women's team could not take down UC Davis and were the National runner-up after a 27-19 loss.

Men's team

Notre Dame fell behind the Aggies, 6-0 early on, but worked their way back into the game later in the first half.

With a successful try and a conversion, before the half, the Falcons went up, 7-6 on UC Davis.

NDC ended up stringing together a 19-0 run as they scored twice after the halftime break, going up 19-6 before the Aggies scored again.

After UC Davis put seven more points on the board, the Falcons kept their foot on the gas pedal and went up 33-13.

Both teams scored one more time and Notre Dame walked away with their first National Championship. This season, the Falcons went 13-0 winning both the DIAA Fall Championship, 39-17, over Bowling Green State University and now a Spring National Championship, 40-20 over UC Davis.

Women's team

UC Davis took a 5-0 lead in the game over Notre Dame.

The Falcons made it close as they shortened the deficit to three, 10-7, with the Aggies in the lead at the halftime break.

In the second half, NDC took their first lead of the game as they went up 12-10 following a successful try.

The Falcons let the Aggies retake the lead by eight points, 20-12, but Notre Dame would score again, making it a 20-19 game. However, that was as close as they would get and UC Davis won the Spring Championship, 27-19, with Notre Dame finishing the season in second place.

The Falcons finished the season with an 8-3 record. Impressively, NDC was able to take down Virginia Tech, 56-5 in State College, Pa. on April 22 just to earn a spot in the semi-final match. On Friday, the Falcons defeated Stanford, 29-17, to get into the championship game.
