BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – Notre Dame College defeated West Virginia Wesleyan College, 4-3, in one, nine-inning game on Monday morning.
Notre Dame was listed as the home team, because the game originally scheduled to be played as part of a double-header, at home, on March 31, but was postponed due to weather.
With the win, the Falcons (6-20, 3-9 MEC) home record is now 2-4 and they have won two out of their last three games, overall. The Bobcats (9-17, 7-5 MEC) have now lost two of their last three games, but are 6-4 in their last 10 games.
Nate Rearick got the scoring started when he belted a solo home run, with two outs, in the bottom of the second inning.
The Falcons added three more runs in the third, as they had four hits in the inning.
Austin Barnhart singled to center and scored on a
Danny Beaver RBI double to left field. With a runner on third and two out,
TJ Lett tripled to center, allowing another run to score.
Zach Santoro capped the inning by stroking a double to center, scoring Lett from third.
NDC did not score again and were held to just three hits after the third inning. On the other side, Wesleyan tried to put together a late comeback. In the top of the eighth inning, they had back-to-back singles by Alex Skinner and Hunter Rotarius. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and the Bobcats had runners on second and third with nobody out. With
Hunter Kuzak on the mound for the Falcons, James Fraser grounded out to the shortstop, Barnhart, allowing a run to score. That was all WVWC could get as the next two batter popped out to right and struck out.
In the top of the ninth inning, Dominic Castello led off and reached second on an error. The next batter, Austin Keene doubled, allowing the run to score. Two batters later, Antonio Vega, singled, allowing Keene to score, making it a one-run game. Two of the next three batters struck out looking, ending the game with runners on first and second base.
For Notre Dame, seven of the nine hitters in the order had a hit. Beaver went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Four Falcons had extra-base hits. On the mound,
Jeff Stover (1-0) picked up the win by going seven innings allowing one run on six hits.
Josh Armbruster (1) came on for the ninth inning and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits. He was awarded the save.
West Virginia Wesleyan's Griffin Roe (1-3) started on the mound and allowed four runs on five hits over three innings. He was given the loss. Dillon Isom went five, scoreless, innings, in relief, striking out six batters.
Notre Dame will play one game against Gannon University, in Erie, Pa., on April 5. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
