Game Recap: Baseball |

Falcons switch things up, split day two

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - It was two completely different games at Fairmont State as the Notre Dame College baseball team lost the first game 7-0 and won the second 14-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons brought out an almost completely different looking lineup in game two to win the final competition in the four game series after their third straight loss at FSU.

Everyone except TJ Lett (third) and Nick Ely (fifth) was replaced or shuffled in the second game by head coach Len Barker. Normally the leadoff hitter, Danny Beaver was moved to the four-hole. Adam Purdy, who has seen some movement in the lineup already this season, was moved to bat first with Zach Santoro behind him. Angelo Tornatore moved up from ninth to sixth while Jacob Carpenter, Robert Williams and Brandon Reinke finished the lineup at seven, eight and nine, respectively.

The strategic adjustment paid off as Notre Dame recorded its largest margin of victory dating back to last season.

Purdy, Santoro, Lett and Beaver did well at the top of the lineup as they each recorded two or more hits. Beaver excelled deeper in the lineup with four hits, two RBIs and two runs; the senior also stole two bases. Lett matched his fellow senior's three RBIs as he and Williams each hit a home run.

Pitcher Kenny Peirson also had a good performance as he stayed on the mound through nine innings allowing seven hits and striking out five batters. Peirson moves to 3-3 on the season after this shutout.

Purdy and Lett each totaled four hits on the day between the two games as they combined for three of the Falcons' five hits in the first game.

Notre Dame will visit California University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 18 for a nonconference doubleheader. The games are scheduled to begin at 1 and 3:30 p.m.
