Falcons lose to Southern Indiana

After a late start, Notre Dame’s offense gets two runs, defense is saddled with two more errors

Box Score
Evansville, Ind. – The Notre Dame Falcons struggled to get the offense going, getting only five hits, and fell to the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles, 8-2 on Saturday evening.

The Falcons (1-3 overall) are still looking for their second win of the season, after winning the season opener. The Screaming Eagles (2-3 overall), went 1-1 in the Dunn Hospitality Classic.

After a nearly two-and-a-half hour delay, USI was able to put the first runs of the game on the board in the second inning. With a runner on first, Nick Gobert reached on an error, allowing the runner on first to advance all the way to third base. Cody Montgomery then hit an RBI single, and with runners on first and second base, a Joe Redburn double, cleared the bases. The Eagles got their fourth and final run of the inning on Buddy Johnson's infield single, which plated Redburn.

Southern Indiana added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning, before Notre Dame's bats showed signs of life in the sixth inning. Danny Beaver reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop, and then stole second. With two outs, Zach Santoro reached on a throwing error by the Screaming Eagles' third baseman, Sam Griggs, which allowed Beaver to score and Santoro to advance to second. The next batter, Jacob Carpenter, then singled, scoring Santoro. After six innings, Southern Indiana led, 5-2.

USI would put the game away in the bottom of the eighth inning, with three runs. With one out, and runners on second and third, Griggs came through with a single through the right side of the infield, scoring one run. Gobert was the next batter and he doubled into left field, plating two more runs for the Eagles.

For Notre Dame, Nick Ely went 1-3 with a triple. Carpenter went 1-4 with the only RBI for Notre Dame. Josh Armbruster (0-1) was saddled with the loss as he started the game and went seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits. He also struck out six.

The Screaming Eagles' Nathan Kuester and Griggs both went 2-4 on the night. Gobert and Redburn accumulated two RBI, each. USI had four multi-base hits. Colin Nowak (1-0) started the game and was given the win, going six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, and he struck out four batters. Three pitchers were used out of the bullpen for an inning, each, and they did not allow a hit.
