INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Notre Dame Falcons comeback attempt falls short on Saturday afternoon, as they lose to the No. 22 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds, 16-12.
The Falcons (1-1) cannot win back-to-back games against Indianapolis, but have a chance to win the series with a victory tomorrow. With the win, the Greyhounds (3-2) are now 4-3 against Notre Dame over the last three seasons.
Heading into the bottom of the second inning, the game was tied at one run. After Jake Perreira and Blake Richardson reached in the bottom of the second inning,
Todd Marshall entered the game for the Falcons, replacing the starting pitcher,
Cam Fuller. Later in the inning, Devon Hensley and Storm Joop earned bases loaded walks. Nick Miller had an RBI single and then Kyle Orloff grounded out to the shortstop, scoring a run. John Eberhardt capped the seven-run inning with a three-run homer to left field.
UIndy would come right back with five runs in the bottom of the third inning. Brendan Dudas had an RBI triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Miller hit an RBI single and then Eberhardt plated two more runs with a single to left field.
Down 13-1 in the top of the fourth inning, the Falcons offense went to work. After pinch-hitter,
Steve Grober walked to load the bases,
Adam Purdy hit a ball to second, which was miss-played by the Greyhounds, Orloff, allowing a run to score. The next batter up,
TJ Lett, then tripled to center field, clearing the bases, and scoring three runs.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Falcons were able to score three runs, with an RBI single by
Ricky Phillips and a two RBI single by Lett.
Down 15-9 in the seventh inning, NDC looked to the top of the order to get them back into the game. Lett homered to left field and, later in the inning,
Nick Ely singled up the middle to score two more runs.
Indianapolis would add another insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning and the Falcons could not piece together another big inning.
The Falcons had six players finish with a multi-hit game and the first five batters in the order had a combined 11 hits. Lett had three hits and an incredible, six RBI, along with being a double away from the cycle. Fuller (0-1) took the loss as he gave up three runs on three hits in an inning of work.
Jake Shaw (2-0) started for the Greyhounds and grabbed the win as he went five innings, giving up six hits, eight runs, but only one earned run, and striking out six Falcons. Dylan Stutsman (2) worked two, scoreless, innings and earned the save. Indianapolis had six hitters with two, or more, hits. Miller and Richardson, both, had three hits, and Eberhardt had five RBI.
Notre Dame wraps up their series with Indianapolis, tomorrow, Feb. 19. The first pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
