Women's soccer looks to win back-to-back MEC Tournament titles

This week: Notre Dame College will host Concord the first round of the Mountain East Conference Playoffs on Thursday, November 2 at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will then play the winner of the West Virginia Wesleyan and Shepherd matchup on Sunday, November 5.
 
Records: The Falcons are 12-3-2 after a 1-0 win at West Liberty last week. Concord is 10-7-1 after finishing its season with a tie while Wesleyan is 15-2-1 and Shepherd is 5-6-7.
 
Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels is in his 14th season as the head coach for the Falcons. During his time at NDC, Shiels has gone 153-94-18 with a 61-8-7 MEC record. Luke Duffy is in his second season at Concord and has a record of 13-17-6. Wesleyan coach, Patrick Holguin is in his seventh season as the leader of the women's soccer program while Jonathan Thayil is in his sixth season at Shepherd.
 
Rankings: West Virginia Wesleyan was ranked No. 19 in the October 31 United State Soccer Coaches Poll. Wesleyan is ranked No. 3 in the November 1 Atlantic Region rankings while Notre Dame is ranked No. 4.
 
Series History: NDC suffered its first loss to Concord since joining the ranks of NCAA Division II this season, but lead the Mountain Lions 8-1-1 during that span. The Falcons trail Wesleyan 4-8-2 and lead Shepherd 11-0-1.
 
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame's senior forward, Alexis Manoa, was named MEC Offensive Player of the Year on Wednesday while four Falcons were named All-MEC First Team. Overall, seven players were earned all-conference honors. The Falcons went 1-1 against both Concord and Wesleyan this season and 1-0-1 against Shepherd. Against playoff teams this season, NDC went 3-0 at home and 0-2-1 on the road.
 
Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord's midfielder, Sarah Hill, was named MEC Freshman of the Year and joined two other teammates as an All-MEC First Team selection. Concord was the second-highest scoring team in the MEC this season with 1.88 goals per game while NDC led the conference with 2.24. The Mountain Lions and Falcons are also similar on the defensive end as both rank third in the Mountain East with 1.12 goals allowed per game.
 
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan joined Concord and NDC with post season honors as Mary Cooper won Defensive Player of the Year and Patrick Holguin won Coach of the Year. Despite ranking third in goals per game (1.78), the Bobcats have done well putting each other in good positions to score. Wesleyan ranks first in assists per game (1.44) with 26 assists and 32 goals.
 
Noting the Rams: Shepherd made its way into the MEC Playoffs with the use of seven ties. Six of their seven ties were either 1-1 (four) or 0-0 (two). The Rams were held scoreless in seven games total this season including twice against Wesleyan. In their previous two games, Shepherd lost 1-0 to the WVWC.
 
MEC Tournament History: Since the playoffs began in 2013, Wesleyan and Notre Dame have won all four titles. Alternating seasons, the Bobcats won in 2013 and 2015 while Notre Dame won in 2014 and 2016.
