This week: Notre Dame College will finish the regular season on Saturday, October 28, at West Liberty. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
Records: The Falcons are 11-3-2 after two shutout wins against Shepherd and No. 10 West Virginia Wesleyan last week. The Hilltoppers are 4-10-2 after a recent loss at Urbana on Wednesday.
Â
Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels is in his 14th season as the head coach for the Falcons. During his time at NDC, Shiels has gone 152-94-18 with a 60-8-7 MEC record. Barry Christmas has been the head coach at West Liberty since the team's inception in January 2011. Last season, Christmas led West Liberty to a 6-8-5 record.
Â
Rankings: Neither of the other teams playing this week received votes in the October 24 United State Soccer Coaches Poll.
Â
Series History: NDC has yet to lose to West Liberty. The Falcons hold a 6-0-4 record against the Hilltoppers after a 0-0 tie earlier this season.
Â
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame secured its spot at the No. 2 seed in the MEC Tournament last week. As a top-two team, the Falcons will host the first round of the tournament. Last week, NDC won both of their game by shutting out their opponents. For this defensive performance, freshman goalkeeper
Kyra McDowell was named the MEC Defensive Player of the Week. McDowell recorded her ninth and 10th career wins with a total of seven saves. Another freshman standout also did well last week.
Janelle Bernal scored a game-winning goal and assisted the other game-winner. Bernal (15 points) joined teammates
Alexis Manoa (24) and
Jackie Corrigan (19) in the top five point earners in the MEC.
Â
Noting the Hilltoppers: West Liberty has scored just eight goals this season compared to Notre Dame's 39. The teams are on the opposite ends of the conference in goals per game (2.44 to 0.50). When the Hilltoppers do score, though it is because of good teamwork as all eight of their goals have been assisted this year. Â Offensively, WLU has been able to get into the opponents side of the field as are fifth in the conference in shots (179) and sixth in shots on goal (81). West Liberty makes up for their offensive struggles on the defensive end with six shutouts this season (third most in MEC).
