This week: Notre Dame College finished its regular season home schedule this week as the team hosts Shepherd and West Virginia Wesleyan. The game against Shepherd will be played today, October 18 at 3 p.m. and the game against Wesleyan will be Sunday, October 22 at 12 p.m.
Â
Records: The Falcons are 9-3-2 after a 0-1-1 week with a loss at Concord and a tie at Fairmont State. The Rams are 4-4-5 this season while the Bobcats have a record of 13-0-1.
Â
Coaches Corner: Mike Shiels is in his 14th season as the head coach for the Falcons. During his time at NDC, Shiels has gone 150-94-18 with a 58-8-7 MEC record. Jonathan Thayil is in his sixth season and lead his team to a 7-9-1 record in 2016. Patrick Holguin is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Bobcats. Holguin had a record of 12-3-3 last season.
Â
Rankings: West Virginia Wesleyan was ranked No. 10 in the October 17 United State Soccer Coaches Poll. Neither of the other teams playing this week received votes.
Â
Series History: NDC has yet to lose to Shepherd since joining the Division II ranks. The Falcons are 10-0-1 all-time against the Rams after tying earlier this season. Notre Dame hasn't fared as well against Wesleyan with a record of 3-8-2 against the Bobcats.
Â
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame need two points (wins earn three points while ties earn one) or needs Concord to lose one of its last four games to secure the No. 2 seed in the MEC post season. If the Falcons earn a top-two seed in the MEC they will host at least the first round of the MEC playoffs. Currently, there are several Falcons leading the MEC statistics as the season comes to a close.
Alexis Manoa (1.43) and
Jackie Corrigan are No. 1 and No. 2 in the MEC in points per game while Corrigan (8) leads the conference in goals scored and Manoa (8) leads in assists. Freshman
Janelle Bernal has also done well in her debut season and leads the Mountain East in game-winning goals (4). Â
Â
Noting the Rams: Shepherd, unlike Notre Dame, has played better on the road this season. The Rams have a 3-2-1 away record and a 1-2-4 home record. Currently SU has tied its season-long winless drought with three games (loss, tie, loss). The Rams also began their season with a loss, a tie and a loss before winning their first game on the road 1-0. Shepherd has spread the ball out this season with eight different players scoring and none of those players scoring more than two of the team's 13 goals.
Â
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan is 12-0 in conference play so far this year. With four games remaining, the Bobcats are 360 minutes away from a perfect season. After starting the year off with a 2-2 tie at Shippensburg, WVWC has gone on a 13-game winning streak to earn themselves a top 10 ranking. A combination of offense and defense has gotten the Bobcats to their undefeated record. Wesleyan ranks second in the MEC, behind Notre Dame, in offensive output (2.23 goals per game) and rank fist in defense (0.31 goals allowed per game). The Bobcats have only allowed four goals this season, three of which came in their first two non-conference games. The only time WVWC has allowed a goal in conference play is against Wheeling Jesuit, a game the team won 5-1.
Â
Success at home: The Falcons have yet to lose at home this season and will look to stay undefeated on Mueller Field this week. So far, NDC has won each of its first six games on the home turf. Notre Dame has won five of its six home games by a margin of at least two goals. In its last home competition, NDC won 2-1 against Charleston.
Â
Senior Day: Notre Dame will host its senior day on Sunday, October 22 against West Virginia Wesleyan. The Falcons will honor their 12 seniors in their final home game of the season.Â
