Notre Dame volleyball stays local with two road games and two home contests this week

This week: Notre Dame College volleyball takes on Roberts Wesleyan College at 6 p.m. and Lake Erie College at 8 p.m. on October 17 in Painesville, Ohio. On October 20, Glenville State College comes to South Euclid for a 7 p.m. contest and West Virginia Wesleyan College will play NDC in the Murphy Gymnasium on October 21 at 6 p.m.

Records: The Falcons are 9-12 this season and are 2-5 in the Mountain East Conference. Roberts Wesleyan has a record of 1-21 and Lake Erie is 15-7 this season. Glenville State holds a record of 0-15, 0-7 MEC and WVWC is 8-13 and 3-4 in the MEC.

Coaches Corner: Notre Dame volleyball head coach, Troy Haught is in his third season with a record of 29-55, 13-26 MEC. Doug Porterfield is the head coach for RWC and led the Redhawks to a record of 9-15 in 2016. Kevin Foeman is in his third season as the head coach of Lake Erie College and currently holds a record of 28-36. For Glenville State, Jim Mercer is in his second season at the helm of the volleyball program and holds a record of 1-46, 0-22 MEC. Nancy Wheeler is in her first season as the head coach of West Virginia Wesleyan.

Rankings: None of the teams received votes in the AVCA Coaches Poll.

Series History: The Falcons have never played Roberts Wesleyan. NDC is 0-8 against Lake Erie since 2011, including a 3-0 loss last year. Notre Dame is 4-1 against Glenville State, who they have played since 2011, and beat GSC 3-0 in 2016. NDC holds a record of 2-3 against West Virginia Wesleyan since 2012. Last season, the Falcons lost 3-0 to the Bobcats.

Noting the Falcons: The Falcons are currently on a two game winning streak after beating Concord University and the University of Virginia's College at Wise. In a 3-1 victory over Concord on October 13, the Falcons had an attack percentage of .260. Melissa Maczuzak had 18 kills, 15 digs and 21.5 points. Mary Kate McHugh also had 18 kills and recorded 14 digs and 19 points. Ali Kaeberlein had 23 digs and Paige Staudacher, who is third in the conference in assists per set at 9.11, broke a school record with 54 assists over four sets. After losing the first match, NDC rallied back to beat UVa-Wise, 3-1 on October 14. Maczuzak broke the program's single game record with 33 kills. She also had 20 digs, 34 points and an attack percentage of .309. Natalie Spadaro added 15 kills and 16.5 points. Ali Kaeberlein, who leads the team in digs with 359, went for 25 digs and Riley Coleman had 13 digs. As a team, NDC had 62 kills and 75 digs. Maczuzak has 335 kills and 365.5 points this season and leads the team in both categories. She is fifth in the MEC for kills per set with 4 and she is tied for 13th in the nation for total kills.

Noting the Redhawks: Roberts Wesleyan College has lost six straight and, during this streak, they have only won two sets. They did take the third set in their 3-1 loss to Queens College on October 13. Courtney Taylor, who leads the team with 127 kills and 138 points on the season, had 14 kills and 15 points. Shelby Strausbaugh had 18 digs in the game. Elisabeth Rivera and Nikki Simmons each had 17 assists. In their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Molloy College, Taylor had nine kills and an attack percentage of .214. Rivera had 23 assists while Strausbaugh recorded 17 digs and now has 260 digs so far in 2017.

Noting the Storm: On October 13, Lake Erie played two games in the Midwest Region Crossover in Aurora, Ill. The Storm beat Indianapolis earlier in the day, 3-1. Bethany Fisher, who leads the team with 313 kills in 2017, had 23 kills, 24 points and a kill percentage of .255. Brooke Peiffer had 13 kills and 18 digs. In the fourth set, LEC won 25-23 and had an attack percentage of .385. Later in the day, LEC lost to the University of Illinois-Springfield, 3-1 after winning the first set. Fisher recorded 16 kills and 17 points while Sidney Fletcher, the team leader with 413 digs this season, had 22 digs. On October 14, the Storm beat Drury University 3-1 and Bethany Fisher had 14 kills and a .238 attack percentage. Fletcher added 27 digs while Crystal Kedroske gave LEC 12 kills, 17 digs and 15 points.

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State lost to West Liberty University 3-0 on October 10 and only had 25 kills and 25 assists. Bailey Brawner leads the team with 114 points and 106 kills this season and she recorded nine kills and nine points in the game while Ai Miyazaki had 15 digs. Miyazaki is the team leader with 190 digs. On October 14, GSC fell to Wheeling Jesuit University 3-0 and scored 33 points over the three sets. Skyler Baeza led the team six kills and seven points in the game and Haley Wolff led the team with 11 digs.

Noting the Bobcats: WVWC went 1-2 last week as they beat Salem International University but then fell to West Liberty University and Wheeling Jesuit University over their homecoming weekend. At home against Salem International on October 10, the Bobcats won 3-0 and had a .304 kill percentage. Hannah King, who leads the team with 269 points and 250 kills, recorded 15 kills, 15 points and a .367 percentage while Hannah Bradford recorded 18 digs against Salem. Bradford leads the team with 377 digs. Katlyn Buckland went for 27 assists in the game. Against West Liberty, the Bobcats only had 28 kills, as a team. Bradford had 22 digs and Emily Doyle led the team with eight kills. Alexis McCollum added 10 digs. West Virginia Wesleyan was swept, 3-0, by Wheeling Jesuit. Emily Doyle had eight kills and 16 digs and Buckland recorded 24 assists.
