FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- After losing their first game of the 2016 season this past Sunday to Charleston, the Notre Dame College women's soccer team rebounded with a 4-1 road win over the host Fairmont State Fighting Falcons on Wednesday night at Duvall-Rosier Field. The Falcons scored all four goals in the second half, surging from behind to pick up another Mountain East Conference victory.
The Falcons (5-1-2 overall, 4-1-2 MEC) fell behind early in the first half following a 15th minute goal from FSU's Erica Uselton. Despite trailing early, NDC allowed just two shot attempts from the Fighting Falcons in the first half, outshooting them 12-2.
However, despite the 12-2 shot advantage in the first half, NDC still trailed by a narrow deficit of 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half of play, it was all Notre Dame.
Just over five minutes into the second half,
Jackie Corrigan ripped a shot to the left side, scoring her first goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1 in the 51st minute.
With the score renewed at 1-1, the visiting Falcons continued to push on offense, dominating ball possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities. NDC outshot FSU by a wide margin in the second half as well, 17-3.
The flurry of offensive chances paid off in the 67th minute as
Alexis Manoa scored the go-ahead goal for the Falcons, 2-1, on a shot to the left-corner of the net. The goal was Manoa's team-leading fourth of the season.
Just a few minutes later in the 74th minute, the host Fighting Falcons mistakenly scored an own goal, padding NDC's lead at 3-1.
The Falcons weren't satisfied with holding a two-goal lead late in regulation, so
Noelle Jester added an insurance goal in the 82nd minute, with an assist from
Hope Vasquez. The goal from Jester gave the Falcons a 4-1 advantage, and the score would remain that way when the clock struck zero, giving NDC a three-goal road win over the Fighting Falcons.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 5-1-2 on the year, including a 4-1-2 mark against Mountain East Conference Competition.
NDC returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 at home against the Concord Mountain Lions in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 4 pm at Mueller Field.
