SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons squared off against No. 6 Wheeling Jesuit at Murphy Gymnasium on Friday night, and the Falcons fell to the Cardinals in three sets.
For the Falcons (8-7, 1-1 MEC) the loss snapped a three-game winning streak, and was their third in seven matches at home, while the victory for the defending national champs, Wheeling Jesuit (12-2, 2-0 MEC) was their fifth in a row overall, and they've won their last four matches in three sets.
The Cardinals had their way throughout the night, as little to nothing went right for the Falcons. The Cardinals won all three sets by identical scores of 25-10, 25-10 and 25-10.
Mary Kate McHugh and
Melissa Maczuzak led the way for Notre Dame with five kills each, and
Tawny Flareau paced the Falcons with a dozen assists. McHugh led NDC with nine digs, while
Riley Riehl added eight,
Ali Kaeberlein added seven, and Maczuzak added six.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday, Sept. 30, when they hit the road and take on the Shepherd Rams in another Mountain East Conference matchup. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
