SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 home victory over the visiting Urbana Blue Knights on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field, staying undefeated in Mountain East Conference play with the win.
The Falcons (3-0-2 overall, 2-0-2 MEC) and Blue Knights battled in what proved to be a back-and-forth affair. The game began at a slower tempo, with the Falcons outshooting Urbana 5-4 in the first half.
While the Falcons didn't score in the first half,
Samantha Shoemaker made two saves to hold Urbana scoreless as well. Both sides went into halftime knotted at 0-0.
In the second half, the NDC turned up the tempo on offense. The Falcons attempted 11 shots in the second half alone, more than doubling their first-half total.
However, the scoreless tie continued for both sides as NDC and Urbana both missed near-scoring chances. Behind a stout Falcons defense, Shoemaker made four more saves in the second half to keep NDC even on the scoreboard.
With the game still tied at 0-0 as the second half progressed, it was
Katarina Doncevic who came through with a clutch goal for NDC. The sophomore scored in the 80th minute, with an assist from
Alexis Manoa, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead going into the remaining minutes of play.
Shoemaker and the NDC defense continued to hold the Blue Knights scoreless over the remaining 10 minutes, securing the 1-0 win for NDC.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-0-2 overall, including a 2-0-2 mark in MEC play.Â
The Falcons return to action on Thursday, Sept. 22 on the road against the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
