SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Saturday marked the second and final day of the 2016 Notre Dame College Volleyball Tournament, and the Falcons swept the competition on Saturday with a 3-2 win over Alderson Broaddus before defeating neighborhood rival Ursuline, 3-1, to conclude the weekend action.
GAME ONE
Notre Dame 3, Alderson Broaddus 2
The Falcons opened Saturday with a 10 AM match against the visiting Alderson Broaddus Battlers, and the match proved to be a back-and-forth affair. The Falcons fell behind 10-8 in the first set, but rallied back with four straight points to take a 12-10 lead.
NDC maintained its two-point lead, leading 20-18 near the end of the first set. From there, the Falcons scored three straight points with kills from
Morgan Toman and
Melissa Maczuzak to take a 23-18 lead.
Ali Kaeberlein eventually closed out the first set with a service ace, giving NDC a 25-20 win in the first set.
The Battlers battled back by taking the second and third sets, leaving the Falcons trailing 2-1 going into the fourth set. NDC proved resilient, jumping out to an immediate 5-1 lead following a service ace from
Tawny Flareau.
Maczuzak recorded consecutive service aces of her own, pushing NDC's lead to 8-3 early in the fourth set. The junior later had a key kill to give the Falcons a 13-9 lead, but AB responded with a 6-0 run to take a 15-13 lead.
NDC responded right back, going on an 8-2 run to take a 21-17 lead late in the fourth set.
Natalie Spadaro added a kill of her own late in the set, followed by a service ace from
Mary Kate McHugh to give NDC a 24-21 lead. Maczuzak then recorded another kill, clinching the fourth set for NDC and forcing a decisive fifth set.
Alderson Broaddus won five of the first six points in the fifth set, taking a 5-1 lead, but the Falcons again proved resilient.
Maczuzak and Flareau scored key points for the Falcons, who eventually battled back to tie the fifth set at 10-10. McHugh then recorded a pair of consecutive kills and Spadaro did the same, pushing NDC's lead to 14-10.
After a pair of points from AB, Flareau won the match for NDC with a kill of her own, giving NDC a 15-12 win in the fifth set and securing the 3-2 win for NDC.
GAME TWO
Notre Dame 3, Ursuline 1
Playing the final match of the two-day, 10-team Tournament, the Falcons squared off with crosstown rival Ursuline on Saturday evening in Murphy Gym.Â
Ursuline escaped with a narrow first-set victory, 25-21, before the Falcons stormed back to take the next three sets en route to a 3-1 win over the Arrows.
Melissa Maczuzak led the Falcons with 16 kills in the match while
Mary Kate McHugh and
Morgan Toman added nine and seven kills, respectively. McHugh also led NDC with four service aces and 22 digs, adding contributions from all perspectives to help lead NDC to victory.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-6 on the season, and 2-2 overall at the NDC Volleyball Tournament.
NDC returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at home against West Liberty University in a battle of Mountain East Conference opponents. Match time is scheduled for 6 pm in Murphy Gym.
