Men's rugby cruises to 59-5 win over WJU

Falcons defeat Cardinals in Home Opener

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College Falcons sped past Wheeling Jesuit University this past Saturday, August 27 with a win of 59-5.

The Falcons led up front with a solid defensive structure which translated well for fantastic, open ball play from the backs. A majority of the Falcons' tries came from loose balls that the Cardinals simply could not maintain when entering into tackle.

Offloads in open field eventually gave the Falcons the upper hand which resulted in tries from Duncan (1), Tupuola (1), Tipton-Fletcher (2), Forro (2), Mount (2), and Wollerman (1). Some sensational kicking from both Weinstock and Wollerman led to an additional 14 points from conversions.

The Falcons will enter this week focusing heavily on set pieces and their defensive structure as they prepare for a well-disciplined St. Bonaventure. The match against St. Bonaventure is set for this Friday, Sept. 2.

Second Side Results

The second sides for both the Falcons and the Cardinals were extremely defensive as the ball was constantly in the hands of their opponents. Both teams' loose-trio were mainly responsible for gaining back possession for their team, however, it was the Falcons who ran away with majority of possession.

The Falcons used the ball wisely which led to breakaway tries on the wing from freshman speedster Torin Tuppein (2).

The defensive structure was led by sophomore Captain Joe Perella, who was as vocal as he was physical. The physicality Perella brought into the game seemed to translate well to centers' Sam Klimkowski (freshman) and Corbin Williams (freshman) as they made their opposition shy into contact after their first meeting.

The Falcons continued to secure ball in both rucks and set pieces as they ended up winning over 85 percent of all their lineouts and scrums.

Like the first side, the Falcons' second side will square up with the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure this Friday, Sept.5.
