AVON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons brought the regular season to a close on Sunday afternoon with a pair of victories to complete a series sweep of the Urbana Blue Knights, with 4-2 and 9-7 victories at All Pro Freight Stadium.
Notre Dame (27-23, 20-12 MEC) will now ride into the Mountain East Conference Tournament on the strength of a five-game winning streak, while the Blue Knights (19-29, 13-19 MEC) saw their season come to an end with the losses.
Game One
Urbana struck first, taking an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Blue Knights took that early lead on a one-out, two-run single from designated hitter Emmanuel Lopez.
The Falcons were able to cut the deficit down to one (2-1) in the home half of the second inning, on
Nick Ely's RBI double to right-center, scoring
Keifer Quick. The Falcons left the bases loaded that inning, then left a runner stranded at third in the third inning, before taking the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth.
The aforementioned two-run fourth inning saw the bottom of the Notre Dame batting order produce a pair of big extra base hits to give NDC the lead.
Troy Findlay drove in the first of those two runs, on a RBI double to the gap in right center to score
Hank Beasore, and Findlay came around to score moments later on
Travis Smetana's two-bagger to the right-center gap.
Notre Dame added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning to stage a 4-2 advantage. They had the bases loaded with one out, when Findlay reached on a fielder's choice, hitting a ground ball to the shortsop, and beating out the relay throw to first on a potential double play ball, which allowed Ely to score.
Cam Fuller (4-2) scored the victory for Notre Dame, allowing just a pair of runs, only one earned on five hits while fanning a pair along the way.
Matt Seekins (4) was lights out in relief for the Falcons, scoring the save after tossing 2.2 innings of scoreless one-hit relief.
Lett and Smetana led the way for Notre Dame offensively, with two hits apiece in a game where the Falcons produced four extra base hits.
Game Two
Urbana scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning, before the Falcons went wild with a three spot in the home half, and topped that by scoring four times in the bottom of the second to take a 7-1 lead.
Quick drove in the first run of the first inning on a RBI single to right-center to score
Danny Beaver, and he scored later in the inning on a RBI single through the right side of the infield off the bat of Smetana. Later in the inning, Smetana got caught up in a run down between second and first and though he was eventually tagged out, he bought enough time for Ely to score.
Beaver brought in the first two runs of the four-run second inning for the Falcons, on a single center field to plate
Austin Barnhart and
Dominic Lombardo. Beaver came home two batters later on Quick's RBI single to left. Ely followed Quick's RBI single with a run scoring base hit his own to make it 7-1 Falcons.
The Blue Knights, however, would not go away. They slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring two in the top of the third two more in the fourth inning, and they tied the game in the top of the sixth inning, getting two runs on AJ Finlay's two-out single to center.
In the eighth, the Falcons had a runner on second with two outs, when Head Coach
Len Barker called on senior
Ross Barker to pinch hit, and he delivered with a towering two-run homer to left center field, which proved to be the eventual game winner.
Hank Beasore (1-2) scored the victory for the Falcons, throwing two scoreless innings of relief, and was able to seal the deal for the Falcons after tossing a perfect ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Beaver, Quick, and Ely all had a pair of hits in the contest for the Falcons, but it was Barnhart who led the way, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The Falcons are back in action again next Friday, May 13, when they participate in the first round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament in Beckley, W.Va. They are tentatively scheduled to play at 7 p.m.
