Game One
Things didn't go so well for the Falcons in game one. Shepherd was able to put a two-out rally together in the first inning, getting a pair of runs with two down, before they opened the flood gates with a seven-run third inning.
The aforementioned seven-run third inning for the Rams was highlighted by a Grand Slam from Designated Hitter Daniel Heleine. Josh Carney contributed with a run scoring single and Trey Porter capped the inning with a two-run double.
Notre Dame got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Julio Rosales started the inning with a triple to the gap in right-center, and came home moments later on a one-out RBI single through the left side of the infield off the bat of
Ross Barker. Barker came home later in the inning on a two-out RBI single from Barnhart.
The Rams added two more runs on three hits in the top of the seventh, before
Jonathan Kovack induced an inning ending, 6-4-3 double play.
Shepherd's AJ Stead (5-1) came away with the win, after allowing a pair of runs on three hits over five innings of work.
Josh Armbruster (6-3) took the loss, after allowing nine runs on eight hits over 2.2 innings of work.
Game Two
Both teams had chances to score over the first two and a half innings of the contest. During that stretch, the Rams left four runners on base, as
Cam Fuller (3-2) worked his way out of a pair of minor jams.
The Falcons fired the first shot, scoring with two outs in the bottom of the third. Rosales kept the inning alive on a two-out double to the gap in right-center field, and scored moments later on
Danny Beaver's RBI double to center.
Shepherd tied the game in the top of the sixth inning. They had runners at the corners with two away, when JJ Sarty scored on a wild pitch to make it a 1-1 game.
In the ninth,
Keifer Quick smashed a one out single down the line in left. Two batters later,
Hank Beasore kept the inning alive with a two-out single to center, setting up the heroics from Barnhart. He fell behind in the count, 1-2, before he delivered the game winning RBI single to right, scoring Quick to win the game.
Fuller turned in another masterful performance. He went the distance, and allowed just a run on six hits over nine innings while fanning seven batters in the process to score his second straight win in as many starts in Avon.
Rosales paced the NDC offense, going 3-for-3, while Beasore delivered a pair of knocks as well.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday, May 6, when they square off against Urbana in another Mountain East Conference double header. The first pitch in Urbana, Ohio, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
