Box Score 2 BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons returned to Mountain East Conference action on Saturday afternoon, as they split a double header on the road against West Virginia Wesleyan.
The Falcons (12-14, 6-4 MEC) opened the day with a 7-2 victory to snap a brief two-game slide, before falling to the Bobcats (10-14, 2-8 MEC), 7-5 in the finale.
Game One
Notre Dame came from behind, and used a five-run fifth inning to take the first contest of the day. After the Bobcats scored a run in the bottom of the first inning, Notre Dame answered in the top of the second, as
TJ Lett drilled a RBI double to right field, which brought
Ross Barker home to tie the game.
Wesleyan scored again in the fourth inning, plating a pair of runs to regain the lead, before the Falcons scored the final six runs of the game.
Notre Dame scored five runs on five hits and capitalized on two errors in the fifth inning. Lett started the rally with a double to left, and
Ricky Phillips followed with a base hit to center, putting runners at the corners. Phillips then stole second base, which prompted an errant throw from the shortstop, which allowed Lett to score.
Danny Beaver had the biggest hit of the inning, a three-run homer, his second long ball this week, and
Keifer Quick reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning which scored
Julio Rosales.
The Falcons plated their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning, after
Nick Ely belted a RBI single, which scored Barker.
Jake Welch (4-2) went the distance and scored the victory for the Falcons. Over seven innings of work, he surrendered three runs, two earned on four hits, and struck out eight batters along the way.
Five Falcons hit safely multiple times in the contest, and Barker led the way with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Beaver, Ely, Lett and Phillips all hit safely twice.
Game Two
The Bobcats scored early again, plating a trio of runs in the bottom of the first inning take the early advantage. Notre Dame was able to chip away at the lead with single runs in the second and third. Lett reached on a fielder's choice to score Baker in the second, and Rosales's sacrifice fly plated
Austin Barnhart in the third.
After a wild pitch plated another run for the Bobcats in the third, the Falcons were able to score single runs in the fourth and fifth to tie the game.
Jake Kirsh belted a run scoring single to center which scored Quick in the fourth inning, and Rosales tied the game with his second Sac Fly RBI of the game in the top of the fifth.
The Bobcats snapped a 4-4 tie with a three-run seventh inning to take the lead, and never looked back. Notre Dame was able to score one final time, plating a run in the top of the ninth on
Travis Smetana's RBI single to center.
Carter Daniels (0-1) tossed 3.2 innings in relief for the Falcons, and was tagged with the loss after allowing a pair of runs on two hits.
Three Falcons hit safely multiple times, but it was Beaver who led the way with three knocks, going 3-for-5 with a run scored, giving him five hits on the afternoon. Quick and Rosales also had a pair of hits in the contest.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, April 3, when they return home to square off against Glenville State at All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio. The first pitch in game one of the MEC double header is scheduled for 1 p.m.
