Cam Fuller tosses second no-hitter in NDC history as Falcons sweep FSU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio – Notre Dame College right-hander Cam Fuller tossed the second no-hitter in Notre Dame College history at All Pro Freight Stadium on Sunday afternoon, as the Falcons came away with a double header sweep of Fairmont State.

Notre Dame (20-17, 13-7 MEC) took three of four in the weekend series and improved their record to 10-3 at home this season, while the losses for Fairmont State (16-22, 6-14 MEC) dropped their record to 3-9 in MEC road games.

Game One
Fuller (2-2) stole the show, as he faced the minimum over the seven inning contest, facing just 21 batters, and only allowed one batter to reach base. He was perfect through the first 5.1 innings of the contest, as he retired the first 16 batters he faced, before he hit Scott Hessler with a pitch in the top of the sixth inning. Hessler was eventually thrown out at second base, caught stealing to end the inning.

Fuller's no-hitter was the second in the history of the program. Matt Kastelic delivered a no-hit bid at the exact same venue back on March 29, 2014. Fuller didn't walk anyone, and he struck out six to score his second victory of the year, in his seventh start of the season. What was even more impressive was that it came in a tightly contested battle, where both teams combined for just two hits, and the game was scoreless going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Falcons got both of their runs on a huge one-out double from Keifer Quick in the bottom of the sixth inning. Julio Rosales reached on a throwing error, which put him on second base before Ross Barker was intentionally walked. A wild pitch allowed them both to advance, before Quick smashed a double to the gap in right center to bring both Rosales and Barker home.

Quick's hit was one of the only two in the contest for either side. Barker had NDC's other hit off of Logan Johnson (4-3), who took the hard luck loss, allowing just two runs on a pair of hits over seven.

Game Two
Fairmont State fired the first shot taking advantage of back-to-back singles to start the top half of the fourth. They had runners at the corners with one out, when Alex Levitan stole second base, but a throw to the plate in order to nail Phil Longnecker was dropped, allowing him to score and putting Levitan at second. Carter Daniels (1-1) was able to work his way out of the jam, allowing just the one run to score.

Notre Dame answered with a pair of runs in the home half of the fourth to take the lead. Travis Smetana walked with one out before stealing second base and he scored on Julio Rosales's two-out RBI single to center. The Falcons had Rosales at first and Danny Beaver at third, when Rosales took off for second and got caught in a rundown. Rosales was eventually tagged out between first and second base, but he bought enough time for Beaver to score, giving NDC a 2-1 lead.

The Falcons added another run to cushion the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Quick reached on a one out walk before stealing second base, and he scored on Nick Ely's RBI single to center field.

Notre Dame was able to pull away by scoring single runs in the seventh and eighth. In the seventh, Beaver started the inning with a triple down the line in right, and came home moments later on Rosales's sacrifice fly. NDC plated one last run in the eighth inning on Beaver's RBI single through the right side to score Smetana.

Daniels took the victory for NDC, allowing just an unearned run on five hits over 5.1 innings of action with a trio of strikeouts. Matt Seekins and Hank Beasore combined to toss 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to hold the lead and preserve the victory.

Ely led the Falcons in game two with three hits, going 3-for-4 with a RBI, while Beaver, Rosales and Barnhart all hit safely twice.

The Falcons will return to action on Tuesday, April 19, when they head to Erie, Pa., to square off against Mercyhurst in a non-conference tilt. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
