Box Score 2 WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Notre Dame College baseball team continued its 2016 Florida Trip on Friday afternoon, taking on the Seton Hill Griffins in doubleheader action. The Falcons fell short in a pair of narrow losses, dropping game one 18-14 before falling 4-1 in game two.
GAME ONESeton Hill 18, Notre Dame 14TJ Lett went 3-for-5 with 4 RBI and one run scored while
Travis Smetana also had 4 RBI with three hits in four at-bats for the Falcons. Meanwhile,
Julio Rosales went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and one RBI.
Seton Hill scored one run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead early on before 13 combined runs were scored in the second inning alone.
After a seven-run inning from Seton Hill in the top of the second, the Falcons responded with big bats of their own.
Ross Barker led off the inning with a double and came around to score following a single from Rosales, putting the Falcons on the scoreboard.
Rosales advanced to second on a wild pitch,
Nick Ely walked, and Smetana smacked a single to left field to advance Ely to second while Rosales scored.
Nate Rearick kept the rally rolling with a single to load the bases, and Lett hit a two-out, two-run single to cut the deficit to 8-5.
Keifer Quick ripped an RBI double to right-center to score Lett, capping a six-run inning for the Falcons to make the score 8-6 through two innings.
The Griffins scored two more runs in the top of the third to push the lead to 10-6, but again the Falcons clawed back.
Three straight singles from Rosales, Ely and Smetana sparked another rally for the Falcons, who scored five runs in the third to take an 11-10 lead over Seton Hill.
Oddly enough, the fourth inning went scoreless between both sides before the offensive firepower returned in the fifth inning. Seton Hill scored two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth, taking the lead back over NDC, 13-11.
In the bottom of the sixth, Quick walked to lead off the inning. Barker hit a single to right field, putting runners on the corners for the Falcons to spark yet another rally. The Falcons scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth, keyed by RBIs from Ely and Smetana, to take a 14-13 lead going into the seventh and final inning.
Continuing the high-scoring affair, the Griffins scored five runs in the top of the seventh and the Falcons couldn't respond in the bottom half of the inning, falling short by a final score of 18-14.
GAME TWO
Seton Hill 4, Notre Dame 1After a combined 32 runs were scored in game one of Friday's doubleheader, game two proved to be quite the opposite.
Josh Armbruster provided steady pitching for the Falcons, allowing just four runs across six innings while striking out four.
NDC scored early as
Danny Beaver led off the first inning with a double to right field.
TJ Lett stayed hot with yet another single, scoring Beaver to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead after one inning.
However, after 14 runs in game one and one run early in game two, the Falcons offense seemed to run out of ammunition.
Julio Rosales went 3-for-3 at the plate, but was the only Falcon with multiple hits in game two as NDC fell short by a final score of 4-1.
