Great Results on Good Friday

Falcons take two from Concord at home

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
AVON, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons executed a double header sweep of the Concord Mountain Lions at All Pro Freight Stadium on Friday afternoon, with a pair of 4-2 victories.

The double header sweep for Notre Dame (10-10, 4-2 MEC) gives them six wins in their last eight games, while the losses for Concord (8-14, 2-4 MEC) give them four in a row on the road.

Game One
Notre Dame came from behind to win the first game of the day. Andy Szamski stroked a RBI single in the top of the first inning to give the Mountain Lions a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning, and Brad Sullivan's sacrifice fly scored Andrew Siegel in the top of the third to plate Concord's final run of the game.

The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the third, where they scored a trio of runs to take the lead, and never looked back. Austin Barnhart started the inning with single to right, and he advanced to second on Dominic Lombardo's groundout. Danny Beaver then reached on a bunt base hit to put Barnhart at third, and Beaver stole second base, which prompted an errant throw from the catcher, allowing Barnhart to score. Julio Rosales tied the game later in the inning on a RBI single to left, before Nick Ely capped the big inning with a  two-out RBI single to center.

Two-out thunder allowed the Falcons to add to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Beaver began the inning with a single through the right side of the infield, and stole second base, before Rosales turned in his second two-out RBI hit of the contest, with a double down the right field line to score Beaver.

Jake Welch (3-2) scored his second straight victory, as he went the distance and held the Mountain Lions to just three hits while allowing a pair of unearned runs and fanned eight batters in the process.

Three Falcons hit safely more than once. Beaver, Rosales and Ross Barker went 2-for-3 in the contest, while Beaver stole two bases, and Rosales drove in a pair of runs.

Game Two
Notre Dame fired the first shot in the second game of the day. Ely started the inning with a base hit through the left side of the infield, and two batters later, TJ Lett stroked a single back up the middle, which put Ely on third. With runners at the corners and two down, the Falcons executed a double steal, which scored Ely to give NDC a 1-0 advantage.

NDC added another run in the home half of the third. Beaver began the inning with a single, which was his fourth hit of the day, before advancing to second on a passed ball and Travis Smetana laid a sacrifice bunt down to move him over to third. Moments later, Rosales struck again with his third RBI of the day, with a run scoring single to right to plate Beaver.

Concord battled back, scoring in the top of the fifth inning and again in the top of the sixth to tie the game at 2-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rosales delivered yet again to give the Falcons a 3-2 advantage. Beaver's fifth hit of the day was a single to start the inning, and Smetana moved him to second on a sacrifice bunt, before Rosales brought him home on a single to center field. Barker followed with a base hit through the right side before a wild pitch put Rosales at second, and he scored after Ely reached on a fielder's choice.

Josh Armbruster (3-2) worked all nine innings for his second complete game of the season and allowed just a pair of runs on five hits while fanning five batters in a winning effort.

In the second game of the day, Beaver paced the Falcons offensively with four hits, going 4-for-5 at the top of the order and scored a pair of runs, giving him six hits in the twin bill, while Rosales went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Rosales drove in four runs on the day on five hits. Jake Kirsh also hit safely twice for the Falcons in the second game.

The Falcons will return to action on Saturday, March 26, when they square off against Virginia-Wise in a Mountain East Conference double header at All Pro Freight Stadium. First pitch in Avon, Ohio, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
