Falcons drop road doubleheader to Yellow Jackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
INSTITUTE, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame College baseball team dropped a road doubleheader to the host West Virginia State Yellow Jackets on Monday afternoon, losing 6-2 in game one and 5-1 in game two.

GAME ONE
WV State 6, Notre Dame 2

The Falcons found themselves trailing early in game one of Monday's doubleheader as WVSU scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, jumping out to a 5-0 lead over NDC.

West Virginia State added one more run in the second inning, taking a 6-0 lead over the Falcons at the time. However, the Falcons responded with offense of their own.

Nick Ely led off the top of the fifth inning with a single to right field, and Hank Beasore followed with a single of his own. Austin Barnhart followed suit, smacking a single of his own to right field to load the bases for the Falcons' offense.

Danny Beaver hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Ely to tag and score from third base as the Falcons got on the scoreboard. Travis Smetana also hit a sac fly to score Beasore from third, and the Falcons ended the fifth inning trailing just 6-2.

However, that's as close as the Falcons would come, losing game one to the Yellow Jackets by a final score of 6-2.

GAME TWO
WV State 5, Notre Dame 1

After a tough loss in game one, runs continued to be a tough premium to come by for the Falcons in game two.

Despite having 10 hits as a team, the Falcons were only able to score one run, coming in the 9th inning of the game. Travis Smetana hit a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth inning to score Dominic Lombardo, but that's as close as NDC would come, losing 5-1 to the Yellow Jackets in game two.

Smetana finished game two having gone 2-for-5 at the plate with one RBI while teammates Julio Rosales, Jake Kirsch and Austin Barnhart each had two hits a piece as well.

Matt Seekins pitched three innings of solid relief for NDC, allowing just one hit and one earned run while striking out three. Andrew Raponi tossed one scoreless inning for the Falcons, striking out one and walking one in a clean inning of relief.

The Falcons return to action on Friday, March 25 at home against Concord University in another Mountain East Conference doubleheader. Game times are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday.
