West Liberty, W.Va. -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team continued its winning ways on Friday afternoon with a 2-0 road win over the host West Liberty Hilltoppers at WLU Soccer Complex. The Falcons were led by
Katarina Doncevic and
Karla DiJohn, who each scored one goal to lead NDC to a road win over the Mountain East Conference rival Hilltoppers.
Both of the Falcons' goals came in the first half, the first in the 31st minute and the second in the 45th minute. The Falcons also dominated the shot total in the game, outshooting West Liberty 17-4.
The Falcons (8-1-2 overall, 7-1-2 Mountain East) finally broke through when
Norah Barnes played a ball into the box, and
Katarina Doncevic shot it past the WLU goalkeeper to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at the 30:29 mark of the first half.
As the first half progressed, the Falcons continued to apply pressure to the Hilltoppers defense. With less than a minute remaining before halftime, it appeared as if both sides would go into halftime at a 1-0 score. However, the Falcons had other plans.
With just 23 seconds remaining in the first half, DiJohn scored her second goal of the season with an assist from
Riley Doyle, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead at the halftime intermission.
From there, the Falcons relied on their impressive defensive front which limited WLU to just one shot attempt in the second half. When the clock struck zeroes, the Falcons held on for the 2-0 road win over West Liberty.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-1-2 on the season, including a 7-1-2 mark against MEC opponents.
NDC returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at home against the visiting Shepherd Rams in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 4 pm at Mueller Field.
