URBANA, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons played their third straight road match on Tuesday evening, and used an incredible 6-0 run at the end of the match to score a five set victory over the Urbana Blue Knights.
The win for the Falcons (9-9, 2-3 MEC) snapped a three match losing skid overall, as well as a three match road losing streak. The loss for the Blue Knights (8-10, 2-3 MEC) was their third in their last four overall.
Urbana came away with a victory in the first set of the night, 25-20. Notre Dame was able to respond with a pair of tightly contested victories, winning the second and third sets by identical 25-23 scores, before Urbana extended the match with a 25-16 victory in the fourth set.
Things didn't look so good for the Falcons halfway through the fifth set. Urbana was two points away from a victory, holding a 13-9 advantage, before Notre Dame caught fire and ran off six straight points to come away with an incredible come from behind, 15-13 victory to take the match.
Of Notre Dame's nine victories, five have come in five set matches.
Melissa Maczuzak led Notre Dame with 21 kills and she added 15 digs.
Mary Kate McHugh added 11 kills to go along with a team high, 19 digs.
Tawny Flareau led Notre Dame with 23 assists and added 13 digs, while
Paige Staudacher added 18 assists, and
Ali Kaeberlein had 18 digs.
The Falcons return to action on Friday, Oct. 7, when they play host to West Virginia State at Murphy Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
