SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons scored a big home upset at Murphy Gymnasium on Friday night, as they took down one of the Mountain East's finest teams in Fairmont State, with a five set victory. 

The Falcons (14-12, 6-4 MEC) have won four of their last five overall, and three in a row at home, while the loss for Fairmont State (15-11, 7-4 MEC) was their third in their last four overall. 

Notre Dame was red hot to start the contest, as they came out of the gate with a 25-18 victory. Fairmont State was able to even the match, as they came away with a tightly contested, 25-23 victory in the second set. Notre Dame needed an extra point to take the third set, 26-24, before Fairmont State forced a fifth set with a 25-20 victory. 

The early stages of the fifth set belonged to Notre Dame, as the Falcons went on a tear with seven consecutive points, getting six of those with Mary Kate McHugh serving to take a 7-1 advantage. Notre Dame was a head, 14-10, before Fairmont State scored four straight points to tie the set at 14-14. The set was tied at 14-14, before Melissa Maczuzak delivered a pair of big kills to complete the upset. 

Maczuzak led the Falcons with 25 kills and added 11 digs. McHugh had 21 kills and 13 digs with six service aces. Ali Kaeberlein led NDC with 26 digs, while Riley Riehl added 14. Morgan Toman had five blocks and five service aces, and Tawny Flareau had 43 assists. 

Notre Dame returns to action on Saturday morning for Senior Day at Murphy Gymnasium. The Falcons will square off against Shepherd at Murphy Gymnasium at 11 a.m.
