SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team defeated the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field, winning by a final score of 3-1.
The Falcons (12-1-2 overall, 11-1-2 Mountain East) were led by a pair of goals from
Jackie Corrigan, as well as a second-half header goal by
Megan O'Connor.
NDC struck early, wasting no time in taking the early lead over WJU. Corrigan scored just 4:33 into the game, dribbling a few times before ripping a shot to the left side of the net to score the opening goal of the game.Â
With the early 1-0 lead in hand, the Falcons looked to widen that margin. Less than 20 minutes after scoring the opening goal, Corrigan was back at it again.
In the 23rd minute, Corrigan settled a pass from
Alexis Manoa and scored her second goal of the game, extending NDC's lead to 2-0 midway through the first half. However, the Cardinals would respondÂ
The Falcons dominated the shot totals in the first half, outshooting the Cardinals 14-3 while holding a 2-1 lead at the halftime break.
In the second half, the Falcons defense continued to limit offensive chances, holding WJU to just three shot attempts in the second half.
On the other side of the pitch, the Falcons offense did let up either.
Megan O'Connor scored a 57th minute goal to give the Falcons a two-goal lead, 3-1, with an assist from
Riley Doyle. The goal from O'Connor was her third of the season, while the assist was Doyle's third of the season as well.
From there, the Falcons relied on ball possession and stout defense as NDC held on for the win over WJU, 3-1.
With the win, NDC improves to 12-1-2 overall, including an 11-1-2 mark against MEC opponents.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 26 on the road against the Concord Mountain Lions in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 2 pm.
