CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons split a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon, falling in four sets to Charleston, before winning a four set match against Bluefield State.
The Falcons (13-12, 5-4 MEC) have now won three out of their last four overall after the split.
The opening match of the day featured the Falcons and one of the Mountain East's finest teams, Charleston, who is now 8-1 in conference play. Notre Dame fell 25-18 in the opening set, before evening the score with a 25-22 victory in the second. UC then pulled away with 25-18 and 25-18 victories.
Mary Kate McHugh led the way for NDC with 11 kills and 19 digs.
Melissa Maczuzak wasn't far behind with 10 kills and added 15 digs.
Ali Kaeberlein had 19 digs as well, while
Tawny Flareau added 29 assists.
The second match of the day saw the Falcons drop a close opening set, in a tightly contested 32-30 battle. Notre Dame was able to recover, as they won the next three sets, 26-24, 25-19 and 25-17 to close out the victory.
Maczuzak led NDC with 20 kills, while McHugh and
Natalie Spadaro each added 10. Kaeberlein added a team high, 30 digs, while McHugh added 16 and Maczuzak had 11. Flareau had 46 assists in the victory.
The Falcons will return to action on Friday, Oct. 28, when they play host to Fairmont State at Murphy Gymnasium. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
