CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- It took not one, but two overtimes for the Notre Dame College women's soccer team to defeat the host Charleston Golden Eagles on Thursday afternoon at Trace Form Stadium. The visiting Falcons won 2-1 in the battle of Mountain East Conference top-dogs, won by a 101st minute goal by
Norah Barnes to lead NDC to its seventh straight win.
The Falcons (11-1-2 overall, 10-1-2 MEC) and Golden Eagles battled in what was a defensive affair, as both teams combined for five shots total in the first half (3-2, NDC). One of those three NDC shot attempts was converted to a goal by
Karla DiJohn, who scored her third goal of the season in the 15th minute to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead. The goal from DiJohn was assisted by reigning Mountain East Conference Player of the Week
Katarina Doncevic, who is second on the team with 11 points.
With NDC leading 1-0, goalkeeper
Samantha Shoemaker and the NDC defense protected the lead for the remainder of the first half.
The second half proved to be much of the same from the first half, with NDC stifling the UC offense while trying to create its own. Both teams tied at 3-3 in second-half shot attempts, and this time is was the host Golden Eagles who connected on an 85th minute goal to tie the score at 1-1 to force overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Falcons held UC without a shot attempt. However, neither of NDC's two shot attempts converted to goals, forcing a second overtime period.
It took just one shot in the second and final overtime period for the Falcons to win it, coming off the foot of
Norah Barnes who scored in the 101st minute on a goal to the top left corner to give NDC a 2-1 win in double overtime.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 11-1-2 overall, including a 10-1-2 mark against MEC opponents.
NDC returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 23 at home against the MEC rival Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals. Game time is scheduled for 4 pm at Mueller Field.
