SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team cruised to a 2-0 home win over the visiting West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field, keyed by a pair of goals from
Maranda Melton and
Katarina Doncevic in consecutive minutes.
In a battle between the last three Mountain East Conference Champions (two for WVWC, one for NDC), the Falcons and Bobcats battled at a back-and-forth pace with neither side having much of an advantage over the other.Â
The visiting Bobcats outshot the Falcons by a narrow 5-4 margin in the first half, with NDC's Samnatha Shoemaker making four saves in the first half alone. However, neither team was able to convert on any of their scoring attempts, leading to a 0-0 tie at halftime.
Coming out in the second half, Shoemaker and the Falcons' defensive front took control of the game. The Falcons defense limited the Bobcats to just two shots in the second half, creating offensive chances for NDC.
NDC outshot WVWC 2-0 on corner kicks in the second half, and one of those corner kicks led to the first goal of the game for NDC.
In the 62nd minute,
Maranda Melton scored the opening goal of the game off a corner kick deflection from
Alexis Manoa, breaking the scoreless tie to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead over the Bobcats.
After taking the 1-0 lead, the Falcons offense wasted no time in scoring yet another goal. Less than one minute after Melton scored, the Falcons tacked on yet another goal as
Katarina Doncevic score a 63rd minute goal to extend NDC's lead to 2-0 midway through the second half.
With a 2-0 lead in hand, the Falcons relied on Shoemaker and the defense to lead the way to a 2-0 home win for the Falcons over the Bobcats.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 10-1-2 overall, including a 9-1-2 mark against MEC opponents.
NDC returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 20 on the road against the Charleston Golden Eagles in another MEC battle. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm in Charleston, West Virginia.
