SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- In a battle between Mountain East Conference foes, the Notre Dame College volleyball team defeated the visiting Concord Mountain Lions 3-1 on Friday night in Murphy Gym. The host Falcons took the first two sets (25-22, 25-20) en route to the four-set win, jumping ahead of Concord to fourth place in the MEC standings.
The Falcons (12-11 overall, 5-3 MEC) were led by junior
Melissa Maczuzak and freshman
Mary Kate McHugh, who each recorded 20-plus kills with 28 and 20, respectively. McHugh had 22 digs while Maczuzak had 15 of her own, leading NDC to its fifth Conference win of the season and second in as many nights.
NDC remained consistent throughout the match, recording exactly 15 kills in each of the four sets.Â
After both teams were gridlocked at 12-12 midway through the first set, Concord went on a 10-6 run to take a 22-18 lead late in the set. However, Notre Dame called a timeout, prompting a 7-0 spurt to run away with a 25-22 win in the first set.
The Falcons carried over momentum from the first set into the second, leading for the near-entirety of the second set en route to a 25-20 win.Â
The visiting Mountain Lions, however, showed resilience in the third set with a 25-21 to force a fourth set at Murphy Gym. NDC immediately leaped to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set, led by two kills from Maczuzak while McHugh and
Tawny Flareau recorded one kill each.Â
After jumping out to the 7-1 lead, the Falcons never looked back as they cruised to a 25-20 win over Concord in the fourth and final set.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 12-11 on the season, including a 5-3 mark in MEC play.
NDC will now rest up for the final weeks of the regular season, returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Charleston Golden Eagles in another MEC battle. Game time is scheduled for 1 pm in Charleston, West Virginia.
