SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons played a pair of matches at Murphy Gymnasium on Thursday evening, coming away with a loss against Kentucky Wesleyan, before winning the night cap against Virginia-Wise.
The Falcons (11-11, 4-3 MEC) fell to Kentucky Wesleyan (8-11) in four sets to open the day, before the came away with a three set victory over the Cavaliers (3-19, 2-5 MEC). Notre Dame has won six out of their last eight matches at home.
Notre Dame's opening match started out well, as the Falcons stormed out to a nice lead and came away with a 25-14 victory, but the Panthers responded by taking the next three sets. Kentucky Wesleyan won 25-18, 25-23 and closed out the match with a 25-18 victory.
Melissa Maczuzak had 17 kills in the contest, while
Mary Kate McHugh added 13 to go along with a team high, 17 digs.
Natalie Spadaro had six kills and led NDC with five blocks, while
Tawny Flareau led NDC with 35 assists, and 10 digs, and
Ali Kaeberlein had 14 digs.
The second match of the day was much different. Notre Dame won the opening set, 25-23, before taking the second set, 25-17, and they used an incredible comeback to take the final set, 28-26. The Falcons were down 18-12, and came storming back. They were down 24-22, but rallied for the victory. With the contest tied 26-26, NDC used a kill from Maczuzak and a service ace from Kaeberlein to win it.
Maczuzak once again led the way with 16 kills, and added eight digs. McHugh contributed 11 kills to go along with a team high, nine digs, and Flareau finished the contest with 38 assists.
Notre Dame returns to action with another MEC home tilt on Friday, Oct. 14, when they take on Concord (WV) at Murphy Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
