SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame College women's soccer team played host to the visiting Concord Mountain Lions in a Mountain East Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at Mueller Field. The Falcons used a pair of late goals from
Megan O'Connor to grab a 2-1 home win over the visiting Mountain Lions.
The first half proved to be a defensive struggle between both sides, but the Falcons controlled possession for a majority of the half. However, despting maintaining ball control and limiting the Mountain Lions' offensive attack, the Falcons went into halftime tied 0-0 with Concord.
The opening minutes of the second half proved to be more of the same; the Falcons dominating ball possession while also turning up the offensive attack. Midway through the second half, NDC had outshot Concord by a 15-2 margin, but the score still remained at a scoreless tie.
In the 72nd minute,
Alexis Manoa attempted a free kick but just missed, hitting the top crossbar as the scoreless tie continued. After Manoa's near-make, it was
Megan O'Connor who came through in the clutch for NDC.
Late in the second half, O'Connor ripped a shot to the back left of the net in the 75th minute, giving the Falcons the 1-0 lead over Concord with less than 15 minutes remaining.
The Falcons defense continued to stymy the Concord offense, keeping possession on CU's half of the field. However, the Falcons weren't content with a mere 1-0 lead late in regulation.
In the 84th minute, O'Connor scored her second goal of the game, this time via direct free kick, to extend NDC's lead to 2-0 with less than six minutes remaining in the game.
Concord added a late goal in the 89th minute, but it was too-little, too-late as NDC held on for the 2-1 win.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 6-1-2 on the season, including a 5-1-2 mark against MEC opponents.
NDC returns to action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 on the road against the Urbana Blue Knights in another MEC showdown. Game time is scheduled for 1:30 pm in Urbana, Ohio.
