Box Score 2 INDIANA, Pa. – The Notre Dame Falcons began a new chapter in program history on Friday evening, as they fell in their first two contests under new Head Coach
Troy Haught.
The Falcons (0-2) lost a four set match to Walsh in their opening bout of the day, before falling in a tightly contested five set match to the hosts, Indiana (Pa.).
Notre Dame won their first set of the day, as they outlasted the Cavaliers in a set that took a little longer to finish. The Falcons won, 27-25 to take the one set lead, before the Cavaliers came back to take the following three sets. They won 25-10 in the second set, before winning by identical 25-23 scores over the final two sets to take the match.
The second set of the day saw the Falcons push Indiana-Pa. to the limit, as they fell in five sets. The Falcons took the opening set, 25-18. They took an early, 3-0 lead, getting two of those three points on service aces from
Tawny Flareau, which was part of a 7-1 run to begin the contest, and they never looked back.
The Falcons were hot at the start of the second set as well, which began with a 4-1 NDC run, but the Crimson Hawks came storming back, as they went on a 9-3 run to take a 10-7 lead, and they never looked back, taking the second set, 25-21.
The roles were reversed in the third set, as the Crimson Hawks got out to an early 4-1 lead, only to see it slip away, as the Falcons scored 10 of the game's next 12 points to take an 11-6 advantage, and never trailed the rest of the way, in a 25-18 victory.
Indiana Pa. won the next set 25-15 to force a decisive fifth set, which the Crimson Hawks won, 15-11, to win the match.
Lindsay Shirilla paced the Falcons on the night with 24 kills overall, and added seven blocks to go along with 10 digs.
Angela Bush had 15 kills on the day as well, while adding seven blocks as well. Freshman
Ashley Ohsiek had 10 kills, four service aces and led the Falcons with eight blocks.
Melissa Maczuzak contributed with 15 kills and also added seven blocks.
Three other Falcons registered double digit digs, as
Riley Riehl finished the day with 14, and both Flareau and
Tawnia Almaraz led NDC with 17 digs each. Flareau had 28 assists while
Shelby Regiec added 16.
The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, Sept. 5, when they play their final two games of the weekend. They'll square off against Pitt-Johnstown at 12:30 PM, and finish the weekend with a 3 PM match against Seton Hill.
