Box Score WHEELING, W.Va. – The Notre Dame Falcons played their first Mountain East Conference match of the season on Friday evening, and fell in three sets to Wheeling Jesuit.
For the Falcons (1-9, 0-1 MEC) the loss was their fifth straight, but it came against a very good Wheeling Jesuit (12-3, 2-0 MEC) team, that has now won seven in a row overall, and they are 6-0 at home.
In the opening match of the night, Wheeling took an early 5-1 advantage, and never trailed. Notre Dame eventually trimmed the deficit to three (9-6) but that was as close as they would get, as the Cardinals won the first set, 25-14.
The second set saw the Falcons hang with the Cardinals at the beginning, as the Falcons found themselves down just two (9-7), before Wheeling went on a 13-4 run, and closed out the set with a 25-14 victory.
The final set didn't go so well, as Wheeling came away with a 25-7 victory to win the match.
Lindsay Shirilla paced the Falcons with 10 kills on the evening, while
Tawny Flareau was NDC's leader in assists with 11, and she added seven digs.
Emily Ball led the Falcons defensively with three blocks on the evening, while
Tawnia Almaraz led the Falcons with eight digs.
The Falcons are in action again on Saturday, Sept. 26, as they square off against West Liberty in another MEC tilt. The match is scheduled for an 11 AM start.
