Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- Playing at home on a beautiful Thursday afternoon, the Notre Dame College women's soccer played host to the visiting Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals at Mueller Field. The Falcons dominated ball control from start to finish, capitalizing on a pair of goals to beat the Cardinals 2-0 in Mountain East Conference play.
NDC came out of the gates with noticeable energy, looking to establish themselves early and take the lead. The Falcons dominated ball possession, keeping play on the Cardina's half of the field.
That ball possession led to an early goal from
Karla DiJohn, who sniped a shot off a deflection to the back right corner of the net, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead just 16 minutes into the game.
The Falcons' defense continued to set the tempo of the game, continuously denying offensive chances from the Cardinals.
Louisa Rygh stood tall in net for NDC, making three saves in the first half and keeping the Falcons in front, 1-0, at halftime.
While NDC outshot WJU 10-3 in the first half, the Falcons weren't satisfied with a 1-0 lead. NDC followed the same theme of the first half as they continued to pepper the Cardinals goalkeeper in the second half.
With regulation nearing an end and the score still at just 1-0, the Falcons continued to push for a late insurance goal. In the 79th minute,
Norah Barnes scored a header goal off a corner kick from
Alexis Manoa, extending NDC's lead to 2-0 with just over 10 minutes to play.
From there, the Rygh and the NDC defense continued their strong play and the Falcons went on to win by a final score of 2-0 over the Cardinals.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-2-1 on the season, including a 3-1-1 mark in MEC play.
NDC will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 27 on the road against the Charleston Golden Eagles. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
