Box Score PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Notre Dame Falcons fell in four sets to the Lake Erie Storm in a non-conference road match on Tuesday evening.
For the Falcons (1-7), the loss was their third in a row after winning their home opener last week, while the victory for the Storm (4-4) was their third in their last five matches.
The contest opened with the Storm scoring 11 of the first 14 points in the opening set. Notre Dame was never able to recover, as they fell in set one, 25-20.
Notre Dame played better in the second set, and held the lead at start of it. The Falcons led by as many as five (11-6), until the Storm came back, and scored four straight points to take a 19-16 advantage, before closing out with a 25-21 victory.
The Falcons kept the match alive as they used extra time to steal a 28-26 victory in the third set. NDC scored six of the first seven points in the set, and led by as many as 10 (16-6), before the Storm rallied, only to fall two points short.
Notre Dame ran out of gas in the final set, where the Storm closed out the victory, with a 25-13 win.
Lindsay Shirilla led the way for the Falcons with 10 kills and 25 digs on the evening, as well as four blocks including two solos.
Melissa Maczuzak and
Kristen Hill both had seven kills, and Maczuzak added 10 digs.
Tawny Flareau had 22 assists and 14 digs, while
Shelby Regiec added 10 assists and 13 digs, and
Tawnia Almaraz had 11 digs.
The Falcons are back in action again on Wednesday, Sept. 23, when they play host to Edinboro (Pa.) at Murphy Gymnasium. The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
