LEXINGTON, Ky. --
The Notre Dame College men's rugby team traveled to Lexington, Kentucky this past weekend to take on D1-A opponent University of Kentucky in their continued bid to qualify an at-large spot for the D1-AA National Championships. It was a mild and cloudy day in Lexington and the team was up against an opponent who was fired up to attempt to take our winning streak away from us. The Falcons' team was joined by an ensemble of parents and family who made the trip down to support the team. The team did not disappoint either, coming away with a 50-12 victory and the second side also had their first win of the season, 36-0.NDC looked a little shaky coming out of the blocks with numerous errors on attack disrupting their rhythm. Cory Graham opened up the scoring for NDC but some uncharacteristic mistakes out wide thereafter by NDC gave Kentucky a chance to get back into the game. Kentucky played a tight game with heavy reliance on their pick-and-go's, which initially caught NDC off guard. Some ill-discipline by NDC eventually cost them as a string of penalties led to Kentucky's first try to bring it within striking distance. NDC finished the half off with two more tries to go into the break with a 19-5 advantage.
NDC came out with a better mentality in the second half, but it was Kentucky who would strike first with a great counter-attack leading to a try after a poorly executed clearance kick by NDC. The team finally strung a few consistent phases together and it led to a couple more tries to Cory Graham and one to Cullen Barelka which opened up the lead significantly. John Santiago and Evan Bradshaw showed what impact they could have by coming off the bench to provide the spark that was so desperately needed. One more try by Kevin Perciak sealed the victory for NDC, 50-12.
In the second side, Matthew Smith made his debut for NDC and led the team from start to finish with his brilliant playmaking ability. Kevin Lui and Aidan Carr were dominant for NDC up front as they regularly put up some big hits while Jordan Rosas showed off his skills in midfield by straightening up the attack. It was their first victory after losing their first two games by margins of only 5 and 1.
The team will travel to the University of West Virginia this weekend to take on the Mountaineers before hosting John Carroll University the following weekend.
